How to Save Money at North Austin Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I have been taking my dog here for maybe a little less than 10 years. I Trusted North Austin Animal & my Dog Died TLDR; - I cant do anything more but strongly urge anyone who cares deeply about their pet to NOT put trust into a company who is quote "still learning". Please go to a place who hires professionals instead. I took my dog to the ER over night & there was a lot of concerning things going on. A potential blockage, the discovery of kidney disease. They gave her IV and said I could get treatment with them or call my vet in the morning to do it there. I decided to take her to her vet bc they know her most. I got home at 4am & called the vet in the am to get her in. She was about the same as when I brought her home from the ER which was not good. I told them all her symptoms (vomiting, not eating, unable to walk) & everything the ER told me. They said we have an opening at 330pm or on monday (it was friday). I specifically asked "is this not an emergency" the receptionist said without acknowledging my worry "we have a 330". I booked it. She said she needed to get the discharge info from the ER & told her I have everything I can send them right now. She didnt even acknowled that. I hung up confused but trusted maybe all the symptoms I am seeing aren't that bad if they would offer me an apt 3 days later. By 1245 my poor baby was gone. She didn't make it to her 330 vet visit. When I called they had the ER notes & told me they should have recommended me to go back to the ER. But they didn't & now my dog isn't here. Its hard to not feel angry & 100% my dog would be alive if the receptionist listened to my concerns or anyone read the ER paperwork when it came in. I trusted them & took their lack of concern as me over reacting. I also blame myself for not advocating for her harder. Instead my two little boys lost their dog & I lost my baby girl. EDIT for Response: While I appreciate the condolences, it doesnt bring back my dog. The acknowledgement that I should have been recommended to go back to the ER and that your staff is "immature & still learning" confirms to me that her death could have been prevented by a knowledgeable team. I cant do anything more but strongly urge anyone who cares deeply about their pet to NOT put trust into a company who is quote "still learning". Please go to a place who hires professionals instead.

They provide wonderful communication and care! We felt very loved. It’s clear that everyone who works here LOVES animals. Such a relief to finally find a Vet we can trust! Dr. Little was so sweet with my cat, very thorough in her examination; and very clear, kind and direct in communication. So relieved to find a team to can trust with my sweet kitty’s care.

Dr. Tomlin was the most compassionate, caring veterinarian that we have ever encountered. She treated Titus, our dog with such tenderness. As painful as it was to see Titus to be put to sleep, It helped to let him go. We can't recommend Dr. Tomlin enough. She's a keeper. She is worth her weight in gold. Because of her, you have us as lifetime customers for our other dog. Also we were very impressed with the rest of the staff (Caricia n Debbie) who attended us. They were courteous , patient and kind. You have an amazing staff!Thankyou

I love Dr Tomlin She is always so sweet and gentle with our cat Leo and makes time for questions. My sister recommended a different vet closer to me and I won’t leave this practice because of her and the excellent staff.

I love the care and the staff at North Austin Animal Hospital. They have been my care team for many years for all my pets at very life stage and care need. It is also important to me that the clinic is staffed primarily by women doctors up to and including Dr. Heppner, the chief of staff. She is my go to but I will happily and comfortably see any doctor there as they are all outstanding and work together to provide comprehensive coordinated care for your animal family members of pretty much any species.
