How to Save Money at Manchaca Village Veterinary Care

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I moved cross country to austin in 2024 and did a lot of research to find the right place for my cat. Its hard finding a new place in a new area that you trust. I relied on reviews such as the one im writing now! I didn't want a fancy corporate place that is selling you more of an aesthetic than a service. The staff is super nice...everyone from the front desk to techs and vets. They're knowledgeable and personable making vet visits less stressful for both pets and humans. They're great with cats moving at their pace and handling them with gentle care especially since cats can be unpredictable. My cat had to have dental surgery and they were amazing. Expectations of surgery day were clear and my cat make a swift recovery. They also partner with CareCredit to making billing less stressful. I drive 25 min to come here and its worth the visit every time.

We really love this clinic. The staff make it feel like a neighborhood vet clinic, but they operate with the efficiency and technology of big practices. You can book appointments and refill meds online, but they’re also always to help us via phone call or text message. The front desk is the best and Dr. Potter is the best human being and pet provider. They have helped us with general care, chronic issues like allergies and arthritis, and also emergencies. They took us in immediately and made us feel safe and calm and in control. I just love them so much. Great care.

We chose this clinic because of the positive Google reviews, but our experience was very disappointing. We brought our dog in for routine bloodwork and to establish care. Two vet techs and the veterinarian attempted multiple blood draws in front of us after asking if we were comfortable watching. Our dog remained calm and still for most of it, yet they were unable to obtain a sample. We were told the difficulty was due to her being overweight and having black fur. We found this odd since other clinics have never had trouble drawing her blood. After several failed attempts, they suggested we come back and heavily sedate her with trazodone. They initially told us to give “two pills the night before and two the day of,” and I had to ask for an exact dosage. The amount recommended (400 mg total) felt excessive for a simple blood draw, especially since her behavior was never the issue. She only became stressed after being poked repeatedly. There was little explanation or reassurance throughout the visit, and the vet’s bedside manner was poor. We left without completed testing and without confidence in the care provided. We will not be returning and would not recommend this clinic.

When we moved from another city it was hard to find a vet that felt like home as our previous one did. Luckily Manchaca vet is that place for us now even though we’ve moved further away from when we first started coming here It’s worth the additional driving to be somewhere that loves your pets as much as you do. It’s always a good sign when your hear the techs and doctors gushing about your beloved pets when they’re in the back 💛

Manchaca Village Vet worked with my schedule and their online system, Pet Desk was convenient. The vet techs were friendly, and Dr. Lubitz's expertise is always reassuring. I will continue to be a loyal client of MVV.
