How to Save Money at Far West Veterinary Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I can't believe I haven't written this review yet because I love Far West so much. My dog has been going there for years and as an extremely fearful patient, he's not the easiest to deal with. Everyone at Far West is always so welcoming, helpful, and great to deal with. They work with you to figure out the best way to treat your pet and couldn't be nicer about it. I would recommend Far West to anyone who is looking for amazing vet care.

ABUNDANT communication! I brought my kitty Tom in because he was acting funny and I felt like it might be an emergency. This is not my usual vet, as we don't really go unless we are *pretty darn sick*. We're tough like that. Well, I took Tom to this clinic because it was near where I was working. I was so impressed with each and every staff member, including Dr. D. They make sure you know exactly what's going on at all times. Morning and night. It would have been enough for me to just trust them after the first couple interactions in person and on the phone, but they wanted to make sure I was informed every moment anything was being planned or occurred at all. I was really impressed with this. They also did a great job getting Tom back to his alley cat ways without totally breaking my budget, even though it was an emergency triage situation. Thank you all so much! (Tom-Tom is strutting around the back yard like he owns it and eating a great deal more wet food now.)

By far the best vet experience! I’ve tried two other vets to no avail for my poor cat who suffers from a neurological condition. Dr. D seemed to really care and want to start coming up with potential solutions and fixes. No other vet until now took the time with us to even move beyond her obvious ailments. My cat stayed the day at their office for observation and they called me with an updated of how she was doing, which was reassuring. They all had fantastic communication throughout my experience. Additionally, The prices were very reasonable compared to others and they weren’t trying to up-sale you like the other vets have wanted to do. I loved you could pay online versus giving my card over the phone. We look forward to continuing to work with Dr. D and the Far West Vet! I may even transfer my dogs care to them as well.

Where to start. This past week has been a scary, emotional roller coaster when my youngest cat began to act lethargic and stop eating, behavior that is completely unlike her. My roommate had gone to Far West in the past and said good things, so I was happy when a cancellation occurred so I could rush my poor cat there. To say I am blown away would be an understatement. Dr. Wilson & staff, from the receptionists to the techs were communicative, compassionate, and understanding. They immediately formed a plan for my baby Topaz, and kept me up to date every step of the way. I walked in knowing vet services much less surgery are pricy, but it still was less than what it would have been elsewhere. Dr. Wilson & staff, to say I am eternally grateful for what you have done for my sweet cat would be a massive understatement. Thank you for having heart, and for saving the lives of those without a voice, including my little Topaz. I guarantee she is grateful as well. Please give Far West a chance when it comes to your veterinary needs- you’ll be thankful you did.

Dr. Kara Moore is an incredible doctor and treated our Abby with kindness and care. Dr. Moore has completed flawless procedures on our sweet girl, leaving her with no scarring or pain along with easy check-ups over the past few years. Our Abby has since passed on after 14 years of a beautiful life and Dr. Kara Moore helped us quickly get to a diagnosis of what was happening to her before she passed. We received a letter in the mail that Far West Vet made a donation in Abby's memory to the Save Animals Fund at Texas A&M. I started crying when we received this letter, thank you for remembering and honoring our Abby this way.
