How to Save Money at Barton Creek Animal Clinic
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.
Reviews from Google
The entire staff at this office is just amazing. They truly treat our fur babies like their own. They are incredibly welcoming and friendly. We had an emergency, our senior dog seemed to be having what we thought was seizures, took them to see Doctor Unlaf for the first time and he immediately assessed our dog. He needed emergency extractions surgery that was so infected, it was causing issues. My poor boy was in so much pain! We took him Monday, he had surgery the very next morning. Our previous vet NEVER mentioned any of this and all could have been prevented. We took our youngest fur baby and both needed extractions. The difference in our babies is huge! The surgery was major and the Doctor did this the very next day and we’re new patients!! as he could see how much our babies were suffering. While it was not what we want to hear, his and his staff’s detailed assessment and the way I saw him checking and caring for our babies was incredibly personal, up front, and very honest , and just like that I feel that our babies found a new comfortable home. We want our babies to last as long as they possibly can, but healthy and for that you need a vet who’s going to be honest and frank about what’s going on with your pet. They too want to fix what’s going on and see you and your fur family happy! I cannot Thank you enough John, Rachel and Jennifer, as well as everyone else in the staff who took amazing care of our babies. If you are looking for a vet family, they are the ones! If this is already your vet family, keep your babies here. You’re in the right hands!

This is a wonderful veterinary practice. Dr. Unflat and his team are very kind and take excellent care of their patients. My dog has a lot of special needs, and the staff are always patient with him and are very thoughtful regarding his care. Furthermore, whenever he has been ill, they have always been willing to work him into their busy schedule. I'm so grateful that my dog has such a great medical team, and I can't recommend this clinic highly enough.

Dr. Unflat and the entire team at Barton Creek have been nothing short of wonderful. We went through a hard round of struggling to find quality care that didn't also feel like extortion several years ago with our Pekingese when he fell ill. With Dr. Unflat and Dr. Van Winkle's help we had several more quality years with my boy, and he really got to enjoy his senior years. They listened to my concerns and trusted my relationship with my dog. Now we've expanded our family with a young and very energetic pit mix and they have continued to provide the best care. I cannot recommend them enough.

I would 10/10 recommend Barton Creek Animal Clinic to anyone in the Austin area. We have trusted them for years with our family dog care, and now for my own cat care. Dr. Unflat and the staff are always so caring and knowledgeable—you can tell they truly love animals. Thanks BCAC!

Zero stars actually. AVOID this place. Our young dog was very very sick with acute illness and actually slowly dying as it turned out. We performed tests which revealed sludge in gallbladder, multiple bacterial infections and astronomical numbers in the labwork. Vet didn't acknowledge the dire straits our beloved dog was in, didn't treat his symptoms and handed him back to us like nothing was wrong and without administering proper care. Another vet later diagnosed him. It was negligent, reckless and grievous. Our dog died a few months later before turning 2.5 yrs. This was our vet for many years but it has gone downhill and failed us and our dog.
