How to Save Money at Austin Veterinary Emergency and Specialty
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I can’t say enough good things about AVES. From the moment we walked in with my French Bulldog during a scary IVDD episode to picking her up the next day happy and walking again, everyone was so kind, communicative, and honest about what was happening. That alone made an incredibly stressful situation feel manageable. Dr. Cigarroa, the neurologist, was amazing. She came into the room, sat on the floor with us, and took the time to answer all of our questions without ever making us feel rushed. The level of care and compassion we experienced honestly exceeded anything I’ve ever had in a human hospital. I’m so thankful for the team at AVES and the care they gave my precious Pinky. ❤️

My Labrador retriever was with AVES after being transferred from my regular vet post-critical surgery for 24 hour post-surgical care, which was excellent. AVES did everything to monitor and stabilize her, to keep her comfortable and to get her well enough that I could bring her home as soon as possible to continue her recovery. Their care of her was loving and thorough, their communication with me was regular and informative and my ability to see her and speak with the covering veterinarian if I had questions was excellent. 100% a 5 star care facility. ❤️🩹

Couldn’t recommend this place more, they saved my Luka man’s life and we are so so happy! We were sent here by someone in Frisco and drove here for an emergency surgery that only they were able to do, as it was a very specific surgery that has to do with his kidneys that ultimately ended up saving his life. This was an extremely stressful week for my fiancé and I as well as our cat Luka and as soon as we walked in the door they were ready to help him. Dr. Brown, Jenna, and every single doctor and tech all the way up to the front desk that worked with him and answered all of our questions were so incredible. This was such a stressful time and they truly were so so amazing. I truly cannot say enough good things about them!

Magnificent! I cannot say enough about the compassionate emergency care here. Particularly from Ashley, Araceli, and Doctor Wilbers. Our 15 1/2 year-old Jack Russell, Breezy, was diagnosed with lymphoma. It was heartbreaking. But, we asked to take her home and be provided with all the medications that she needed to be comfortable until the end. At this point, we have everything we need and she is resting as peacefully as she rests when she is well. Again, I absolutely cannot stress enough, about the care, compassion, and professionalism that we were shown at AVES. Everyone we spoke to was an excellent communicator who understood our needs and most importantly Breezy’s needs. Right now she’s home. Surrounded by the familiar smells, environment, and the people who love her most. Bless you all! You’re the best.

This place is just amazing. I had an emergency come up with my Frenchie IVDD every dog owners nightmare. I was referred to several places. AVES was the only clinic that I felt took my situation serious. Other clinics simply told me we will get back to you later. We will let you know. IVDD is serious I don’t have time for we will let you know. AVES made adjustments to get us in ASAP. Dr Sutton and her team is so amazing. Not only with my Frenchie but with me cause I was yes FREAKING OUT. They got us right in and by the time the other clinics called me back to see, ok I bay is the issue now. We were already home recovering. So THANK YOU AVES from the bottom of my heart for saving my best friend Napoleon Don’t call anyone else just go to AVES THEY ARE THE THE BEST They sent me pictures and called me to give me updates as he stayed 2 days in the hospital Just simply amazing people at this clinic Thank you again from me and Napoleon 🐶❤️
