How to Save Money at Austin Urban Veterinary Center

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

This review is long overdue! My dogs Bailey and Kemba have been patients of Dr Helen for almost 5 years and she is amazing. So helpful, friendly; and you can tell she truly cares about the animals. I credit her (and the vets at AVES) for saving my girl Baileys life. She had very strange on and off nausea symptoms with occasional vomiting which we originally thought may be a stomach bug. After Dr Helen saw her she raised concern that she could have something a bit more serious going on and recommended doing an US in the office. After this US she saw some bubbles which concerned her more and she recommended we take her to AVES for overnight monitoring to make sure they could intervene if things went south. Well her intuition / experience was correct and Bailey ended up having a rare colonic torsion which required an emergency surgery. Had this surgery been delayed and blood flow not be restored we would have had to put her to sleep. After this entire ordeal I did some research on the diagnosis and realized how incredibly lucky we are to still have Bailey with us. This is a difficult condition to diagnose quickly and many dogs unfortunately don’t make it. Thank you Dr Helen for saving my best friend- our family is forever grateful!

Dr. Rivera and the staff here have been wonderful with my dog’s acupuncture sessions. They always do their best to make sure my anxious 12 year old dog is as comfortable as possible. I thought Pippin would be too scared to get acupuncture but he’s been doing great with his weekly sessions for the past 2-3 months.

Dr. Jessica Morrissey is always fantastic with my cat Rex. At home he’s a perfect angel, but he turns into a complete demon at any vet appointment. We’ve been going to Dr. Jessica for 5+ years now and she handles him so well! We’ve collaborated to work out ways to get him checked out, and she has helped him overcome his asthma coughing as well as his elevated calcium levels. Always super responsive and I trust her completely with my fur baby. I can tell she genuinely cares so much about each and every one of her clients. He’s almost 11 years old and super healthy thanks to Austin Urban Vet!

This is super important if you take your dog to this vet. I had an AKC champion French bulldog "PEARL" She was 8, and that was diagnosed with pneumonia. They treated her and said she was fine. I took her in 6-8 times over the next 12-16 weeks. I told them she still has discharge and cannot go for any kind of walk. Each time a different technician saw her, and each time they said she had allergies, giving me drops, charging me on average $200/visit. NOT ONCE did they put a stethoscope on her to listen to her lungs. -- they said we can X-RAY her $400! -- Prior to taking her to Mexico, I took her in, and that "exammed her" and provided a Federal Health Certificate, claiming she was healthy to travel. The next day, 24 hours later, I landed in Guadalajara. Any animal goes through a health inspection by a vet at the airport. They checked her and said she needed to immediately go to a VET as she had pneumonia.- had I not had a residecy card, they would have sent me back to the US> After the vets here cleared up her pneumonia, Pearl passed away as her lungs were so damaged from the chronic untreated pneumonia in Texas. -- I filed a formal complaint with the Texas Board of Veterinary Licensing. I am awaiting their response. -- This is a MONEY CHURNING Vet. / I have owned over 20 AKC championship dogs, and have NEVER had such a horrible situation with a vet. -- BEWARE!

I have always had a great experience here. Dr. Ives always walks through my concerns with my Bernie and has always made me feel listened too and comfortable with the decisions we make from medications to bloodwork to just advice in general. The staff is always so sweet to Bernie and make sure he is comfortable and reassured even after something like an oral vaccine. Definitely recommend them if you’re looking to switch or start with a practice!
