How to Save Money at Appalachian Animal Hospital
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.
Reviews from Google
If I could give 10 stars I would. Dr Mangum saved our German Shepherd puppy from parvo. He met us the night before Christmas at the clinic and immediately starting taking incredible care of him. The staff and the receptionist were amazing as well. Dr Mangum is the kindest vet I’ve dealt with in my 50 years of owning animals. I don’t care how new his clinic is. I care about how he and the staff took care of our baby. If you are looking for a kind, knowledgeable vet, I highly recommend him. Anyone can leave a negative review. There’s always 2 sides to a story. Look and read his positive reviews.

They were pretty rough with my small parrot. They trimmed his nails and beak (which was not necessary) entirely too short and nicked his foot and beak. He came back to us covered in blood which they claimed to be their own. My bird did bite the assistant, but it was obvious my bird had been cut too. He was traumatized for days after and we ended up taking him to UT emergency vet to get him checked out after this appointment. It is not a parrot safe environment and if you are in Tennessee and looking for a good avian vet, I recommend Lange Animal Hospital instead!

Fair warning to anyone who loves their pet, NEVER take your precious pet here. My poor cat was taken in at 8 am and when I called for updates at 12 they hadn’t gotten to her surgery, when I called again at 4 they couldn’t give me a proper answer about her condition and whether she was in surgery or recovery. The attitude of the receptionist, vet, and technicians there has been horrible and disrespectful, they treat the animals like toys and when I finally came to pick up my cat when they were putting the idea up for her to stay over night, they STILL wouldn’t tell me anything about her condition or answer my questions about the procedure until I was let into a room at 6:40, the vet FINALLY showed up with my cat at 6:50 and I got to take her home at 7:03. These people have horrible waiting times, they don’t give updates about your precious pets, and they don’t care about the stress and safety of the animal. On top of all of this, the constant sound of animals crying out in fear and pain riddled the building, and the building was also absolutely disgusting, filthy and disorganized, cluttered, and it stunk of rot and decay. This is NOT a good vet’s office and I’ve NO idea why they haven’t been shut down or run out of town at this point in time. Pet owners and animal lovers alike, if you’re thinking this is your last option in Morristown for a vet, PLEASE try somewhere else, anywhere else, first.

Putting dog down. Had an appointment. Had to wait in the room with a nervous dog for 2 hours waiting on the doctor to get there. No doors, so you hear every animal howling and yelping. Always good for an already stressed dog. So I poked my head back to see if anyone was there. Always nice to see two dead dogs on the floor poorly covered with trash bags (will not include pictures because those are not my dogs), knowing that's how my dog will be handled. I would not recommend this place. We were forced to stay because no other clinic could see us, our dog was suffering, and all other clinics were booked. Paid $250 and they did nothing to resolve this failure on their part. Our dog was in pain and scared for 2 hours. As a personal note. I think the Doctor is a nice enough guy. I believe his fault is he over extends himself because he wants to help. It is not that he does not care about the animals or owners. I believe the problem is, because he does care, he takes on too much as a result leaves people feeling neglected. That's what we felt.

Sad to see all these bad reviews. Dr. Mangum has saved my dogs and cats lives. He has been so great to my family and done so much for us. My mother has used him for years and he’s been wonderful to her as well. He even brought her baby home with him one night to keep an eye on her to see if she would pull through the night after a severe emergency surgery. I love this vet and he is wonderful. All of the “45 minute” waits are not always true and I went in there today and waited maybe 20 minutes, 10 to get into a room another 10 for the doctor.
