How to Save Money at Hackett Animal Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Last Wednesday, I brought my 7-year-old Boston Terrier, Millie, to Hackett Animal Clinic because she had suddenly become very sick. It was only 30 minutes before closing, but they still told me to bring her in — and I’m so thankful they did. Dr. Latham and her assistant worked tirelessly to figure out what was wrong with our sweet girl. Millie was extremely ill, and I had to make an impossible decision — leave her overnight on fluids and hope she improved, put her down, or risk transferring her elsewhere even though the chances of survival were slim. We hadn’t yet received her bloodwork results, and my husband wasn’t with me, so I decided to give her a fighting chance. After leaving, my heart felt heavy knowing she’d be alone overnight. But around 7 p.m., Dr. Latham called to tell us she had stayed with Millie since we left around 3. I can’t even put into words how much that meant to us. She truly went above and beyond. We decided to come pick Millie up and take her to an emergency clinic in Murfreesboro, but sadly, she passed away peacefully in my husband’s arms on the way. The next day, Dr. Latham called with the bloodwork results — Millie had undiagnosed diabetes that caused her organs to shut down. As heartbreaking as it was, we finally had answers and knew there was nothing more we could have done. Dr. Latham spent 20–25 minutes on the phone with me, walking me through every detail with so much compassion and patience. I will forever be grateful for her kindness, empathy, and the love she showed our girl. Even though we wish Millie was still here, we take comfort knowing she was cared for by such a dedicated and loving team. We will always recommend Hackett Animal Clinic to anyone looking for a vet who truly cares. ❤️

My husband and I have been taking our animals to Hacket Animal Clinic for years. They have always been very nice and helpful. A week ago our little dog Bullet became very ill. He was alarmingly ill. I had to work but my husband rushed him to the clinic. He really didn't make it in time. He got there at closing. They staff was very kind. The Dr stayed over and took care of our dog. He has fully recovered and is back to his usual mischief.

They were so nice when I had to put my cat down, because he would not eat or drink and had lost so much weight , the thyroid meds stopped working for him..

I have used Hackett Animal Clinic in the past. I was always unimpressed with the staff in the front office, but the care my animals received at a reasonable price made up for that. There are 2 reasons why I have found a new vet. One- you can not make an appointment. At all. Don't even think about getting there 30 minutes before they open and think you will get seen first. You wont. People get there an hour and a half early just to wait to keep from waiting. It is ridiculous. Two- I was told today it could be up to 2 hours to get my cats nails trimmed. The woman at the desk was clearly put out about me being there at all. Well, if you don't take appointments- people do tend to just drop by don't they? And here's the real kicker. She told me I had to wait in my car with my cats. I couldn't use the air conditioned waiting room. Let me say that again. She told me I had to wait in the car with my cats. For a possible 2 hour wait? In 100 degree heat? Don't people get arrested for leaving their pets in a hot vehicle??? And here is a vet's office telling me to do it. This is absolutely unacceptable. The rudeness at the front desk and complete crap about waiting in your car far outweights the care you get. Do yourself a favor, and just go somewhere else.
