How to Save Money at Scruffy City Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

My dog had a seizure on Thursday and they had me in the office Saturday. The service was awesome and I left knowing my Bruno would be ok. Glad I found this nugget for my pet. Definitely going back.

I will never visit a different vet office if I can help it. Our dog got parvo and the entire staff treated Pancake like she was their own dog. They were compassionate and honest every step of the way. Dr. Tindell let us call every single day to give updates on her. He always had time for our questions. We're actually considering naming our next four legged friend Tindell. Sweet Pancake did not make it, but they made our difficult time as peaceful as possible. They even gave us a paw print and nose print so that Pancake can live on in our house forever!

We brought our new puppy in for a check up and booster. Dr. Killey and his staff were super friendly and so great with her. Their prices were very affordable and we look forward to working with them for years to come.

I took our dog and cat to Scruffy's Animal Hospital at the end of May for their annual shots. We used Dr. Dixon (previous owner) for years prior to this so this was our first trip since with it being the new owners. My daughter's cat, approximately 15-months old then, was taken in the back to receive his annual vaccinations. My recommendation is that you check your statement vs the treatment the pet received and here is why: Our cat became very ill four weeks after our first visit. I took him to Scruffy's the day the symptoms started and the vet recommended the following: blood work including testing for feline leukemia and FIV, fluids, anti inflammatory injection, anti nausea meds, and an antibiotic for which I was told he received and I paid for. He was taken in the back for all of this. She said to call back on Thursday if he was still symptomatic. He was worse on Thursday morning and I called the office in tears - fearing the worst. The woman at the front spoke to the vet and relayed that she recommended hospitalization. Sadly, money is an object at my house. I asked how much this would cost and with a dismissive tone, the woman said, "Oh, I don't know that. I wouldn't know." I paused thinking she would say, "Let me find out and call you back," but she never did! So of course I asked her to find out and call me back. The female vet, Dr. Parker, called me back and told me the snarting price and said that additional treatment would increase the cost (naturally). I told her if I brought him in, I'd need to know about the treatment plan and pricing before anything was done and she said, "Of course." She calls me back after I drop him off and she did her initial eval. She basically said fluids because adding an anti-inflammatory could impact his ability to fight the infection since that's the body's natural response. She also said, "I held off on the anti nausea meds yesterday so I'm going to give those today to see if that'll help get him to eat." Soo... Wait... You charged me for an anti nausea meds the day prior but never gave them? Interesting. I didn't say anything about it though, I was still too emotional and just listened to the professional guidance. I reminded her I needed to know before anything additional was to be done because I really didn't have the funds. Ultimately, without my permission, they performed an x-ray, gave an appetite stimulant, and a steroid injection. As mentioned above, I was charged for an anti nausea injection that was never given on Wednesday. I gave three stars for two reasons: 1) my cat is still alive and I am so grateful and 2) after I complained to the owner (Brandon) who was the vet in charge when I picked up my cat on Friday, he reversed the charges because I hadn't agreed. He did make it right and I appreciate that. My advice though is to check the bill and ask questions.
