How to Save Money at Forest Hills Veterinary

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Everyone is super nice and friendly here. From the front desk to the staff in the back and the doctor is excellent. Any time my girl has an issue they see her that day or the next. Thankful to have found such a nice place to take my fur kids!

This is out 5 year old kitty, Hemi (who somehow got the nickname Carl... don't ask), though if you met him, you'd think he was a declining senior. A few years ago, he was diagnosed with chronic stomatitis, which is essentially feline gingivitis. His gums were always bright red, sore and smelled aweful. He never ate much and would never clean himself. We were told the best form of treatment would be routine steroid and antibiotic shots and teeth cleanings, so every few weeks we would get his shots and twice a year have him put him under to have his teeth throughly cleaned. He would always come home from the vet exceptionally happy, literally knowing that he would enjoy some relief. However, in the past year it seemed as if the temporary fix was lasting shorter amounts of time before he was miserable again. We took him in recently for a teeth cleaning and expressed how bad his health and personality had been deteriorating and that we were willing to do anything that would make him feel better. Dr. Hammady examined the situation while Hemi was put under for his cleaning and made the decision to do a partial tooth extraction - the only permanent solution to stomatitis, but also one that is not made lightly and is only done in the most extreme cases. It's been about 2 weeks since his surgery and Hemi is like a brand new cat. He has started purring regularly, something he hasn't done in years! We have offered him every kind of wet food in the past but he would show zero interest (only eating dry food which I can't imagine was fun to chew with his sore mouth). Now, he's been devouring any wet food we give him. He's cleaning himself, playing with our other cat, and is generally 100x happier than he's been in years. This whole novel is our way of sending the world's biggest THANK YOU to Dr. Hammady and the rest of the team at Forest Hills Veterinary. Thank you for helping us keep him comfortable over the years as well as taking the plunge to try to and permeantly resolve this issue. All of our animals receive such loving and skillful care from your vetinary practice and we cannot express enough thanks!

They have been seeing my horse for years and have always been great. I started taking my dog their about 1.5 years ago for normal check ups and teeth cleaning and everyone is very kind and helpful. I recently adopted a very sick dog a few months ago, and they got me in the same week for an appt. With my new dogs condition she was needing blood work every few weeks to check on her condition. I was surprised that I was able to bring her in to do this without an appt. yes you do have to wait, but it beats waiting months for an appt. And every time, the vet techs would come out and explain everything in detail about her blood work and what our next step would be. I’ve worked in healthcare for many years and can understand how busy they are, but they really do care and I wouldn’t take my animals any where else! Don’t be afraid to call if you have a question! I’ve called a few times in the past about all my animals just asking questions on what to do in a situation, and they were always patient and gave great advice, which of course in doing so eliminates any unnecessary future appts or avoidable emergencies! Thank you guys for everything you do for the community!

Just cannot explain how wonderful this veterinary clinic is! After approximately 16 + years our dog developed some issues and I had to make the very difficult decision to have him euthanized today. Dr. Hammaday took the time to treat him with extreme dignity and care. He and his gentleman technician were so kind to me and “Eddie”. They were so caring and compassionate, not just with him but with me as well. This was a choice I had to make, but they took such good care of him. I will never forget their kindness. May God bless you, Dr Hammady and your entire clinic!

I always had a good experience with my other pets until today. I rescued a puppy who just so happened to be pregnant within a week of me having her she gave birth and they were not able to fit her in (understandable). Today the runt began having issues and was cold to the touch. I called the emergency number and was lectured by the doctor about not having the mom seen sooner rather than helping me with the baby. The baby passed within a few hours of us talking and I am very disappointed in the way I was treated simply because the puppy having the issue was not a “patient” of his. Your job is to help animals not just select ones. I will be looking for a new vet and refuse to let him touch the other puppies.
