How to Save Money at Selinsgrove Veterinary Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I used to take my dog to them for everything. When the pandemic hit; they were the ONLY vet that didn't allow you to accompany your pet... okay fine it's a pandemic, almost understandable.... but here we are YEARS after the pandemic and you still can not go inside with your pet. My dog is like my child, and NOBODY will handle my dog without me present. Highly disappointed.

SCAM!!! Worst Vet ever. I had to wait 2 hours to get into my appointment. And explicitly told the receptionist that I did not want a vaccine (that was not expired yet) and did not need testing. They took my dog, made me wait in my car, didn’t call and ask if it was ok to give her said vaccine and testing, did it withiut my permission and knowledge charged me $200 for it. Do NOT go here. It’s a scam and they will take your money.

Im sorry this is a long one . Worst vet office ever! Originally they wanted over $1000 for my emergency. I paid them almost $800 to solve my cats urinary blockage. Two days after the surgery he still had not urinated so I called them, hoping to get him in immediately. They told me to wait a few more hours and then go to another vet (because they were closed). He still didn't go by the following morning and I called them again and they stated they couldn't get him in immediately and to take him elsewhere. I expressed his bladder that night. I called other reputable vets next day and no one was either taking new clients or able to get him in. I called selinsgrove again and the same story. The following day he still didn't urinate and his bladder had ruptured. He had to be put down. I will never be back and I told everyone about the experience I had.

Dr. Tom and his top notch crew have been nothing short of amazing. I moved home right at the start of the shut down and when Princess (my 15 year old and one of three dogs) needed her Rimadyl refilled they went out of their way to request my dogs recent lab work from across the country, and refill her medicine for her! They didn't HAVE to do this, they went above and beyond for my dog, so that she didn't have to be in pain. Not to mention that he noticed things on her labs that my previous vet totally missed (he said nothing but nice things about my previous vet, which is respectful after finding their slip-up!), and created a solid plan going forward to address those issues. Dr. Tom is extremely knowledgeable, he knows his stuff and tells it to you like it is, and I like and respect that. Fast forward to today. I can only Thank God that they were able to get this fur kid in today. She gave us such a scare and had a seizure. She's no spring chicken, and I was prepared for the worst, but luckily, Dr. Tom and his team were efficiently able to create a treatment plan for my furkid after thoroughly reviewing her labs and she is resting comfortably here at home. I am completely confident that he has my dogs best interest at heart and he definitely gained a worthy customer with two other furkids excited to meet him and his team! Not to mention the cost for an emergency appointment was very reasonable, 1/5 the cost of emergency vet trips elsewhere (and with the three accident prone kiddos I have I am well aware what emergency vet trips cost!), and the labs and cost of medication? WORTH IT FOR MY KIDDO. The costs were fair for the top notch treatment my kiddo got today. I paid just over $400 for an emergency vet trip, testing and medication, AND I GOT TO BRING MY BABY HOME! I would gladly pay this amount any day if it means my furkid gets the chance to get better, and gets to spend another day here with her fur brother and fur sister. Looking forward to future visits through the remainder of all of my dogs time here with me. THANK YOU GUYS AND DR. TOM!!!!!
