How to Save Money at Monroeville Pet Hospital (Jana Oster, DVM)

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Our Sparkle, 9 1/2 years old, wasn't doing well for the last week. She is one, sorry, was one to hide from anything that was wrong with her. For her first 3 years of her life, she was an outside cat that belonged to one of three community colonies or was abandoned (not too, totally sure). After my mom saw her, my mom immediately wanted her. So, we wanted to help with the cat population, and after a while, we found out she needed an immediate hysterectomy due to pyrometria. Then, after about a year, she was diagnosed with diabetes. Of course, this had to happen the week my mom and I were set to move to Pittsburgh from Charleston, SC. We didn't have any insulin to take with us in the 24 hours it took us to get here because of no ice on board, but she went into remission, and we have no idea how. Fast forward to the last week. I noticed that her sides were getting wide. I was worried that she had a blockage. After searching for a while for a great rating vet, I saw Monroeville Pet Hospital, and I liked what I saw. So, I went on their website, looked around, and sent a message. Michele called me and offered an appointment that day. Dr. Oster was straightforward but kind as well. Sparkle had fluid in her chest cavity and in her abdominal cavity. She told me that I could spend tens of thousands of dollars just to come to the same outcome. We both agreed that Sparkle should be in "hospice" care. Dr. Oster also told me that Sparkle would let me know when she's ready to go. Sparkle was never one to hide, even if something scared her. She would just go to another open area. Well, after she ate wet food for the last time and just got the tip of her tongue wet, she then went into my room to go under my bed. This was officially her way of telling me that she was ready to go meet St. Francis of Assisi. Of course, I left out some minor details but not the important ones. I messaged Michele again, and she was able to get me in all this week. I met Dr. Aiello and she said I was doing the right thing. When I brought Sparkle in for the final time, she had gotten worse. I won't give the details. I've had pets all my life, and even while I was in the womb, however, it never gets easier to say goodbye. Dr. Aiello talked me through everything that she was going to do. Even though I knew the process, I appreciated that she did that. I was used to a one step process instead of a two-step process. Dr. Aiello told me that the first injection does sting a little bit, but this is to relax Sparkle. In the photo that Sparkle's head is down into her blanket, this is that step taking effect. Dr. Aiello said it would take about 5 minutes. It only took 3 minutes. Then, it was time to say goodbye. Sparkle crossed over just a few minutes later. What I noticed when Sparkle left, Dr. Aiello covered up Sparkle. That gentle gesture meant so much to me. I was able to spend as much time with Sparkle as I needed and try to compose myself. I would highly recommend Monroeville Pet Hospital. They took great care of Sparkle. Thank you to everyone who helped Sparkle cross over.

Dr. Oster and her staff are friendly and professional. I have been taking my pets to Monroeville Pet Hospital for over a decade now, and I have never been disappointed with the care my pets have received. I know Dr. Oster will give me her professional and personal opinion on all the care options available, especially when it comes to the difficult choices we sometimes have to make for our pets.
