How to Save Money at Allegheny South Veterinary Services
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I put my total trust and lifelong care for my puppy ( and my puppy who lived a long life before her) and also my kitty, who was Ferrel,In Dr. Suzanne, as they pointed me in the right direction how to make her into the love kitty she is now. I know with Dr. Mullens, and her caring, loving, knowledgeable staff, my pets will always be safe & in the best care, that is genuine, and always personal. She and her staff go the extra mile to make sure my cat & dog are healthy & happy, and that I fully understand her treatments & life plan for them.

The only positive thing I could say about this place is the prices aren’t too bad. However, the staffs incompetence doesn’t make up for that. The receptionists were rude. The vet techs seemed to not know what they were doing and just didn’t have answers for my questions. Instead of saying they would go ask and find out, they just said they didn’t know or seemed to guess. The Dr was barely in the room and also didn’t have answers to my questions and concerns. They did most of the examination and vaccinations out of the room, which wouldn’t have bothered me as much if they would have updated me during or afterwards. I didn’t see the vet again to be updated how things went or how he behaved, which other vets have done, until I asked the receptionist a question about what happened when he was out of the room. I asked about a neuter as he’s a senior dog, who we took to this practice his entire life up to this point, and they said it really didn’t matter. I also asked about heartworm testing and was told that also was completely optional since he’s not on heart worm medication. I’ve been told from other vet techs that it’s very important to be tested since he’s not on medication for it. We got a call back a few days later about our dogs blood work and were told everything was fine. I wasn’t too thrilled with the care he received so I ended up taking him to another practice a few months later for another check up. All of his previous vet records were sent to his new vet and the new vet went over his past records with me. They said that the paperwork showed that he has Lymes, which was a complete surprise to me as this practice told me his bloodwork was fine. The new vet office retested and found that he does in fact have Lymes, and we’re currently working on treating it. Allegheny South Veterinary never followed up again about any bloodwork and never sent any appointment reminders or anything to me for my dog. If I hadn’t taken him to another practice, who knows what would have happened with my dog if his Lymes was left untreated. I looked over his old vet records myself and with a vet tech and found that their records are confusing and borderline negligent. The records show the Lyme positive but the only follow up recommendations in the chart are for unrelated vaccinations for the next year. They also showed no concern for any of the lumps / masses on my dog and didn’t even tell me what they thought of them. The doctor couldn’t have cared less about my dog. I’m so grateful I found a new vet that actually seems to care about my dog. The doctor and the rest of the staff at ASVS should show a little more care and concern for their work and their patients.

Dr. Mullings has been taking GREAT care of my dogs for over 19 years. She is the most compassionate and caring vet that I have ever had and my pups feel so comfortable with her and she staff. She has very reasonable prices as well. Definitely a WONDERFUL place to take your pets.

Dr. Mullings and her staff are the Best! She’s been our vet for a long time. We wouldn’t trust our dogs to anyone else. When we had to let our Chopper go over the rainbow bridge few yrs ago, she was so caring, so understanding, and gave us all the time we needed to say our goodbyes. Now with Brimley, we know she’ll (and staff) give him the utmost best care and love she has given Chopper all his years. Thank you Dr. Mullings and Staff for another great visit!
