How to Save Money at Wickiup Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

We had to put in a contact form to Wickiup, in order to euthanize our 16 year old cat. From the get-go the person emailing me apologized for not being able to respond quickly (on their closed day), was extremely nice, prompt and scheduled everything I needed. When the time came - we walked in about 15 minutes early but our room was already ready - they were absolutely prepared for us. I do not remember the assist/vets names, but goodness they were incredible. They handled my old cat like a star, they gave him 100's of pets, cuddles and love. The vet had explained that she felt lumps all over his tummy and letting him rest would give him the best peace and comfort we could give him. When we explained we didn't know how this worked cause we never had to do this, they explained everything they were doing. They held him and pet him as his time came, he went so peacefully and felt so loved. The most important part was they called me a week later to ask for my address, as they had not gotten it. Another week later, I received a letter in the mail from them - I expected kind of like advertisement or mail spam. However, this wasn't the case, these incredible people (many of the staff) had hand signed a card with so many lovely messages of empathy and love for our old man. Thanks for everything you did for us and Thiccums, before he passed, even for a short moment that you all were there.

Very happy that I found these guys so close to home! 🐶💕 I feel safe depending on them as my little family's primary vet. Great care at a transparent & fair cost! With how much careful planning we have put into welcoming a dog into our lives, it was very important for us to find a great local vet. La Pine doesn't have many options & I was fully prepared to need to go into Bend or beyond for my pets' vet care, but I decided to try Wickiup Animals Hospital and I am super happy that I did! We just had our first appointment with them for our 16 week old Akita's third vaccine set, puppy exam, & microchip. The staff were very friendly, warm & welcoming! If you know Akitas or more primitive breeds, you know that even puppies can still be very standoffish & apprehensive in new situations or around "strangers". Every staff member did a phenomenal job of making the experience positive for him which will help ensure less issues in the future as he grows into a very large & powerful adult dog. He got nothing but "good vibes" from the staff & was happy to greet them all & get lots of affection and treats. Overall he was happy to be there & I know he will enjoy going back haha The staff was also very knowledgeable on breeds & their differences (something I've noticed is surprisingly lacking in some circles). In our area I tend to have to be prepared for lectures from the rescue community when they notice I have a purebred dog (despite him being from a well renowned, ethical breeder & having waited for two years for him) and it can sometimes feel like I have to constantly be ready to validate or defend myself from judgement or disdain for not "rescuing" but the staff here were very professional, kind, & not at all judgemental. I felt very welcome in their space. They were careful to be sure he getting just the care he needed & not anything excessive. They were interested & excited to work with him, & I felt comfortable being able to refer to them in the future for any needs surrounding his health & well-being. I work in the dog industry & I was super pleased with the information they included in the puppy starter information packet they sent us home with. In particular, it was awesome to see thorough information on food & nutrition options & why they are important. I know there is a ton of misinformation about dog food in particular & that bit of information is going to be so helpful to so many dog owners! I have a hard time feeling comfortable trying a new health care provider for my pets or myself & I have been hesitating to look for a new veterinarian since moving counties & had instead been opting to drive 3 hrs one way to go to my old vet 😅 I'm glad I was able to find someone more local because puppy care is so much more frequent & there is much higher potential for unexpected vet trips than with our adult cat. Thank you Wickiup! Really looking forward to having you guys around for hopefully the rest of Kaizen's long life 🐾

This establishment is very clean and all the girls from the front desk to the providers were very friendly and sweet. I recently rescued my pitbull PorkChop from a shelter here in the Central Oregon area. I haven’t had him long but really wanted to establish his care asap at a Vet Clinic as I don’t know too much about his medical history. Not only did they get him in immediately, but they were so kind and attentive and really worked with my work schedule. They handled him gently and accommodated his personality. Because he’s a rescue animal, he is still adjusting to having a forever home and with that, comes some much needed dog training. They were not judgmental in the slightest and communicated very well with me regarding his care and any upcoming appointments he may need in the future. He only needed 1 vaccine and I’m kind of embarrassed to say I lost my debit card right before his appointment and then my ATM was down and I was unable to withdraw cash to pay for it. They were so kind and understanding and have allowed me to come in tomorrow and pay instead. I really appreciated that they went the extra mile and still gave my dog his vaccine- even when they didn’t HAVE to. I certainly didn’t expect it and would’ve waited on his vaccine until I got my new debit card or my ATM was working again. Thank you Wickiup for being so wonderful with my dog. I am very happy that PorkChop will continue being seen here. 5 stars all the way.
