How to Save Money at Birch Street Animal Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I had been taking my dog to this clinic since she was born in 2013. They put my dog’s mom down of cancer in 2015. My dog’s aunt had a 10lb mass pulled out of her just this last year. All of this happened at this clinic is my point. About a year ago I took my dog in because I was concerned about a fatty tumor that had grown pretty fast, they told me that me dog was just over weight and needed to obviously loose weight. She would run around the yard all day. Now, it was about four months later or so, she started to get upset when she was moved like she was in pain. I took her in again to get checked out and reminded them both times about both her mom and her aunt. Again, I was told that she was just over weight and needed to loose weight. I refused to take her back after that point, because I knew they would tell me the same thing and do nothing but take my money and waste my time. They went down hill about 6 years ago after their long term assistant left the clinic. These new assistants are not good at all. The vets here don’t listen to your concerns at all. They ride you off and act like you don’t know your own animal. We are now at today… my dog was looking very down and depressed, she won’t really get off the couch, basically stopped eating and drinking water, and she wasn’t even taking her bone to help clean her teeth. I knew better then to call this clinic to get her checked out. I call a vet hospital in Oregon City who got her in about two hours before her appointment just to help me figure out what was wrong with my dog. They did blood work and found her white blood cells at 192 and the bacteria that fights infections to be about 98(?). The vet at the hospital explained to me that her numbers were about 10x the normal amount and that she most likely had cancer. The next day the ER vet’s confirmed that she had cancer and I had to say goodbye to my dog. That all happened two days ago. The point of that part is to say that IF Birch St would have just offered to run blood work that they could have caught the numbers being abnormal and could have prepared me for loosing my dog kind of soon. Instead they rode me off and didn’t even validate what I was telling them. They acted as if I was crazy instead. This wasn’t the first animal that my family has had that this type of thing happened to. I told everyone in my family to go else where if they think there could be cancer in their dogs. My dog is the last animal I will ever take to this clinic. Her dying of cancer the way she did was my last straw with this clinic. I’m super disappointed that they went down hill they way they did and my dog had to suffer the way she did at the end.

Most friendly vet I’ve ever had. All of our pets have loved their visits. Staff treats you like family. Their dogs behind counter are great and friendly.

I called today to set up an appointment for our new puppy. The guy on the other line was very rude, he told me he wasn't taking a new client which is understandable. I stated that the account would be under my GF name. Which he found but didn't know if it was going to work because we haven't been there for a couple years. The issue was how rude the guy was over the phone and trying to push me off the phone without letting me explain that the account wasn't under my name. That being said I figure I'd try somewhere else.

Been coming to this vet for 12 plus years. Prices are reasonable. But the Vets are great with dogs and always there to answer and questions or concerns I have about my pets. Would highly recommend them!!
