How to Save Money at Pawtown Veterinary Care

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

We had the best experience taking our fur babies to Pawtown! The entire staff has been nothing but amazing to us at every single visit - Wendy at the front desk is always so welcoming and our cats loved Amanda - she was the best vet assistant and we loved how happy she was to see our animals at every appointment! They were also so great at getting our dog Henry in last minute when he was having tummy issues. We also really want to thank Dr. Miller and Dr. Stayer for helping us relocate our dog and 2 cats back home to Hawai'i. They really made this entire process less stressful for us. There is a lot of tests and paperwork to get your pets into Hawai'i so we really appreciate everyone at Pawtown for making this possible! Dr. Miller was so thorough and researched all of the requirements prior to our very first visit - We were so impressed by how much she already knew about Hawaii's rules for bringing pets into the state. We were able to turn in all of our paperwork on time and have all 3 animals released directly to us when we arrived on O'ahu! Thank you so much for getting Truffle, Florence, and Henry back home to us without having to go through quarantine!

I cannot say enough wonderful things about Pawtown. My beagle had a little emergency and with just moving and everything I had to take her to a new vet. I have never been so impressed in my life. From the minute we walked in, the great receptionist was very friendly, the tech (usually my dog never goes up to someone and it’s very hesitant), she totally won him over immediately. Then Dr. Erin Miller came in for the exam and was absolutely the best ever. This was the first time that my dog has gone to a veterinary clinic and not been shaking and extremely nervous. When he was done, he pranced out and wasn’t rushing to get out the front door. I cannot tell you how compassionate and gentle they are. Everything about everyone that works there, it’s so obvious they love what they do. Thank you, I am so lucky to have you take care of my dog forever. 🐾 🐾

I discovered Pawtown when my 11yr old pet got very sick in two days. They took her in with no hesitation and took care of her. After which I got a puppy and continued my business with these ladies. They are smart, quick, compassionate and thorough. Brodie is now 5 months old and I can honestly say he has the best care possible.

"Paws" down Pawtown Veterinary Care is the best place around. I typically visit for my wellness checks, but after visiting early in the year I realized they keep cookies all year long. Knowing I was a good pup and deserved a cookie, I injured my tail so I could go back and visit that cookie jar. Plus, if you pretend to be scared about them touching your injury, they will give you ample amounts of cookies plus cheese whiz. With wolf, Brodie (age 1)

We are new patients of Pawtown vet. My dog recently had some complications with his surgery performed elsewhere, and Pawtown vet was so helpful and really put my mind at ease. They were able to get us in for a same day appt, consult with the specialist, and devise an action plan quickly. Can't recommend them enough, all of the staff! We are so thankful!
