How to Save Money at Brookswood Animal Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Every staff member we have worked with has been kind, patient and knowledgeable. Great communication and timely follow up on tests and other matters has been exceptional. Rasa, our dog, runs into the clinic and enjoys her time there. I have never had a dog excited to visit the vet. Over the decades, I have had good vets, Brookswood Animal Clinic is the best so far!

Brookswood Animal Clinic has the sweetest greeters that pop their furry heads up from behind the counter as you walk in. And the staff are excellent too! Most importantly, my 14 year old, Pittie pooch, Gracie May, feels at ease there. It could be because 7 years ago, Brookswood Animal Clinic took her in and fostered her, I believe, saving her life. Dr. Loomis and Kristin are her favs. She’s slightly biased because Dr. Loomis fostered her initially, after receiving her from a shelter, & enabled her to recover from a large tumor removal surgery. * In 2015, I received a call from Kristin saying they had a sweet 7yr old Pittie who needed to be adopted. My previous dog passed a couple years prior, and when I met Gracie, it was love at first sight.* 💚 My previous pooch, Venus Fly, (aka V-Child) had the Brookswood Animal Clinic original crew, as her care team as well. That team was with me as we sent her off across the rainbow bridge, on the floor in the back of the clinic. The staff allowed me to stay with her as long as I needed. They were kind, empathetic, and remain so to this day. RIP Venus Fly. Two thumbs up for Brookswood Animal Clinic.

My dog is really big, really nervous and sometimes reactive to other dogs when he’s uncomfortable. This can make necessary vet visits really stressful for both my dog and myself. Brookswood’s staff is always incredibly accommodating, patient and supportive with his needs. This makes an otherwise stressful experience very easy, they always go above and beyond to make my dog feel as comfortable as he can. I can’t say enough good things about their service and staff. (:

I have been with Dr Ruth Loomis since Kona was born ( I cannot believe I have never posted a review). For 12 years she has provided loving and responsible care to both of my furkids. Both have had major mishaps on adventures that required surgery and the team at Brookswood is incredible. Kristen, Jessica, Reesa, Lisa - my dogs LOVE them all and are not fearful of the vet. Ruth takes the time to answer all my insane questions, explore every option for their care. As they have gotten older they have some mobility issues and she has been brilliant in helping treat these. There is no where else I would take Kona and Copper and if you are looking for a vet you cannot go wrong with this practice!

I was so happy with the service I received when our corgi needed to be seen while we were on a road trip. They were so kind and took time with her for her to be comfortable in the new environment. They took care of her issue and we were on our way in a timely manner. Thank you so much for your great service!
