How to Save Money at Blue Sky Veterinary Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

This clinic is extremely overpriced. My girlfriend took my dog in for a nail trim today. They charged us $84 for what they call a comprehensive health exam, on top of the nail trim and medication we already had. My dog had a small bump on her dewclaw that could have been looked at while they were doing the nail trim (considering that’s all they did). They did nothing out of the ordinary or extra to take care of the issue and it sure wasn’t a comprehensive health exam at all. Something that took them 1 minute they charged an extra $84. They didn’t prescribe anything other than Vetprofen for pain/ inflammation (which we already had) and said to keep an eye on it. Had to call multiple times to speak with the manager who basically said there’s nothing they can do other than return the medication and I could contact the company who owns them. Not to mention the Manager told me, “ It sounds like something you should take up with your girlfriend” which was extremely rude. Very dissatisfied and disappointed in the service I received as well as the price I was charged. I would not recommend this clinic to anyone especially with all the great veterinary clinics to choose from in Bend, OR. Erin, when you respond to reviews and comments you should be honest about the situations and conversations that took place. Rather than trying to cover it up.

I love Blue Sky! Dr Tenent has hands down been one of my favorite vets. She was able to catch a hematoma in my dogs spleen at a very early stage through some slightly off blood work. All three of my dogs have benefited from her care and I wouldn’t think of seeing anyone else. The rest of the staff is great as well! The receptionists are skilled and helpful. Highly recommend.

Took our dog to another vet three times for itchy ears and eyes, that vet suggested eye surgery, we went to blue sky and they said she had allergies which is what I thought all along, she got some allergy meds and she is happy tail wagin now! No more itchy eyes and ears! Would highly recommend blue sky vet, nice staff and vet, our dog is a big dog and a bit of a handful but was no problem for them!

Our dog Riley recently had two tumors removed from her tail which eventually involved removing a portion of her tail. Dr. Harrell examined Riley first and was very thorough when describing options and the procedure. When I scheduled the surgery for early January I asked Doctor Moles if Riley's "sister" Molly could come with her. Both are rescue dogs and although they look alike they are a couple years and a couple breeds apart. Molly has no problem with the Vet's office but Riley has never liked to go in and gets VERY nervous. When Molly is with her she is so much more comfortable. The day of the procedure both girls went in together and were made comfortable in a large kennel where Molly stayed during the surgery. When they kenneled Riley after the procedure she was put in a kennel next to Molly so as she woke up her "emotional support dog" was right there. The extra care, understanding and flexibility used to assure my pet was comfortable was extraordinary and much appreciated. Dr. Moles contacted me pre and post procedure and also was very clear with his explanation. Dr. Moles is experienced and knowledgeable and has taken care of my dogs for several years. I really feel the service on this trip was above and beyond excellent!
