How to Save Money at Durant Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Drove up here without an appointment solely based off advice of a friend - my frenchie female had been in labor for hours and her contractions were not producing. Dr. mills called me on his way in- got us in and out in 30 minutes. Had a healthy litter and mommmas doing well. Very appreciative of his friendly and prompt staffing stepping in to action. We will definitely be returning customers and I highly recommend Durant Animal Hospital.

I took my dog in for an abscess or a cyst Dr Mill operated pulled the tooth cleaned the teeth removed the lump all with out testing to see if he had an infection first. My Daughter has been doing research on this and found out that my dog should have been treated for a bad infection before any surgery this has made my dog worse so we went back for a recheck Dr Mills used a dirty ink pen he pulled out of his pocket to open my dogs painful mouth and says yup yup that’s what I thought. As soon as he thought that it was more than an infection he should have done testing. I am not happy and will not be going back

I took my tater in a few weeks ago bc the poor baby is allergic to everything and had horrible sores on him and in less than 2 hours we had been seen , tater got a shot and wound spray and made it back home and sores already improving by next morning. Thank you for taking such good care of tater.

We have been using Durant Animal Hospital for many years for our fur babies. It’s really awesome to have people who love your animals and take the best care of them. We have had many different situations throughout the years with many different dogs and cats that we have brought there and each time they have been taken very good care of and came back to us doing well. This last visit this week was to get 2 new kittens who adopted us to get fixed, as of this writing it is the day after and you would never know they had anything done and the incisions look wonderful! Thank you for all the care and attention you give to our fur babies.

I'm not impressed. The price was good for what I got but the care my pet received was minimal. "It's ok" would be the best review I could give. I brought a mellow, but semi-feral barn cat in with a small unhealed facial wound and a history of at least 4 months of weight loss, constant eye dilation, and behavior changes. He has been hard to catch so this visit was important. I couldn't get him into Freda's place because the wait surpassed the time they were open, so I decided to try Boyd's. He barely looked at him, decided to cut the facial tissue out without much conversing with me, which seemed a tad drastic. I asked about the rest of the problem and he said it would improve after the procedure. His two girls just gave me a paper to sign without talking. ZERO effort to explain to me the potential risks of sedation on a 10 year old underweight cat. Cute. Good thing I already knew that info. His removal went fine and healed, but all other symptoms persisted and I went to another vet for a second opinion. One $15 test later I find out my cat has feline leukemia. That's the reason for all of it, unhealed wound, sudden blindness, weight loss. Anyway, remember to get your cats booster shots for this disease. I had no idea you needed boosters after the vaccine and now our cat may not life another 4 years. That's a lot of guilt.
