How to Save Money at Veterinary Services

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

The Dog Lover

He was very rough & uncaring. Took my Daisy in to get x-rays. He refused saying her swollen joint in her leg was allergies 😳 He even grabbed her by her hurt leg to move her & caused her unnecessary pain. I took her to VCA, they took one look and said possible bone cancer. Bone cancer was verified after w x-rays and tests. This man doesn't deserve to be practicing, who gets confused of allergies over bone cancer. And he purposely grabbed her leg trying to make his point that she never needed x-rays.

They were so kind in my time of sorrow. I had to put my fur baby of 13 yes to rest. Dr was so kind and gentle and talked me through the whole process. He and his team were a Godsend. Afterwards I received a sympathy card from them with a seeded paw print to plant and watch some beautiful flowers emerge from that. Thank you so very much for your kindness.

STAY AWAY The staff are friendly and helpful, but the actual vet shouldn't be doing surgeries anymore. The take care home for our pet included cleaning withHYDROGEN PEROXIDE (corrosive and notorious for slowing down healing) for her incision and as little movement as possible. Even with our best, rather considerable, efforts , the staples come out and her insides became her outsides, and so we called the number he gave us for after hour emergencies... we were still on hold after leaving for the emergency vet. We, painfully, rode about 10 hours, talked to numerous vets, paid 4.5k, and we're told by no less than 4 of those vets that peroxide was one of the worst things he could have sugggested. We are moving across the country and have been hoping to plan a wedding, but now we are just planning how to pay for this guy's mistakes. I told him what happened and he immediately got defensive. I wasn't asking for anything and figured he'd want to know there were issues with his patient (our dog, Katy), but he dismissed her after a precursory glance and told us to "just talk to your new vet" when we asked about the peroxide and we never saw him again. I really just was hoping he'd empathize with us and feel bad for the immense pain and hardship he caused, but maybe he thought we wanted our money back; I understand stuff happens in medicine (more ofte with veterinarians), but you'd think someone who claims to be a Christian would act a little more, well... Christian.

This guy is a joke. He only cares about lining his own pockets. If you don't want to pay an astronomical fee for his heartworm than he is going to charge you for a prescription. And of course he'll only write it for half a year and only for the brand that he approves. And when you call to ask why, his staff just leaves you on hold for over 5 minutes just waiting for you to hang up. He doesn't care about the welfare of the animals, just that he can feel superior and take your money. I definitely don't recommend, but I am sure a lot of people don't. Which is why he is the only vet I town with an empty parking lot.
