How to Save Money at Sheffield Veterinary Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

We used Sheffield for boarding our dog, Sparky, while we went out of town. They took excellent care of him. We will be back again!

It’s unfortunate to have to give this review after bringing our pets here for nearly 20 years but considering the unnecessary trouble caused, I would like to give a fair warning to others to be sure they ask questions when the business fails to do so in regards. We booked a boarding appointment more than a month prior to the board date. One of our pets was new to this clinic as she was just four months old. Considering, we would need to bring her in for her pre-board check a couple days before we were to board. “Shea” comes back with our puppy with a considerably cold response in how that went and then said, “that’s not the problem though.” She goes on to say that one/two of our pets aren’t vaccinated. I reminded her that upon booking the boarding appointment, I was advised that they would contact our other vet office and retrieve the records. Of course this isn’t a big deal, as a call could be made on the spot but there was quite a bit of confusion about our dogs having or not having “Lepto” prior to boarding. Long story short, none of our dogs ever had or needed this vax before and it was not mentioned upon booking the boarding appt as well. Multiple staff stated “they must have lepto to board or have surgeries” there and each said this had been their policy for 5 years. I then reminded them that this was NOT mentioned upon booking AND that they JUST neutered (surgery) our male only a month or so previously and did NOT require such vax at that time either. ALSO reminded them that they boarded our dogs LESS than one year prior when we went out of country…. So needless to say they had to backpeddle and the not so friendly Shea changed her response stating it’s only been a requirement for the past year…..So I kindly reminded her again that they boarded our dogs less than a year ago AND just did surgery on our male just a month ago and again they never mentioned these requirements upon booking appointment. She goes on to say that lepto needs given 2 weeks prior to a board or surgery, she tells me that they could not board our dogs…. And we were leaving in a matter of 3 days for two weeks! Thankfully my other vet would offer to board them with such little advance notice for the two weeks (even though they typically only board for a maximum of one week). They also don’t agree with the lepto requirement. Thank goodness they helped us out and proved they truly go above and beyond for their good and long standing customers.

I am so grateful for Sheffield Veterinary hospital! At a time when my cat was in his last days of bone cancer, we were well cared for. The staff was so kind! We received the most beautiful sympathy card after he passed. Thank you so much for taking care of Murphy and I!

Hands down one of the cleanest and best ran veterinarian offices you could ever go to. From the time you walk in the door the staff was all smiles with a warm welcoming feel. The technicians who handled our dog were extremely nice and professional. Dr. Marshall does an amazing job explaining the who, how, what’s, and whys!! Taking the time to answer questions and also explaining what my choices are and which are more beneficial vs. others was huge to me on making an informed decision. I cannot recommend a better place for you to go. Thank you again for the great care and look forward to our future visits!!!!
