How to Save Money at Metropolitan Veterinary Hospital Cleveland

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

We brought our dog over to have a Ct scan done per our regular vet. They provided us with what they believed the issue was from what our vet had provided them. Several tests were performed and came back with a different conclusion. We are still waiting for some test results so we know what the next steps will be. Everyone who works there is super friendly and took great care of our dog. Would go back again if we needed to.

The entire staff at Metro were so amazing. From the front of house to each doctor I encountered they were all outstanding. I knew my dog was in great hands after meeting with everyone taking care of him. We were in an emergency situation and they put me at ease. They did not push surgery and expensive forms of care, they helped me decide the best course of treatment. So Thankful for them!

This hospital saved my baby's life. I am forever grateful to Dr. Sherer, the critical care team and the receptionists. It takes incredibly special people to work in this field and I can tell you that every single person I interacted with was *truly* exceptional. The amount of compassion and empathy shown to me was unprecedented. I received updates exactly when they told me I would and my take home instructions were thorough and very detailed. Thank you again to everyone for saving my baby's life.

August 2, my son text me and told me that he noticed that Apollo seemed like he wasn’t feeling well & he threw up. Saturday August 3rd we noticed that he didn’t seem to be improving so we took him to Metropolitan Veterinary Hospital around 10pm. On the way to the veterinary hospital, we noticed that he seemed to be progressively worse. he started throwing up violently in the car and shaking. When we made it to the hospital, we told the intake person at the desk what happened…They took Apollo to the back right away. We proceeded to sit there (sleep there) until 4:30 in the morning when I finally lost my cool (After asking almost hourly and them saying the doctor would have an update for us soon,) I asked for my dog back if they weren’t going to give me any updates as to how my dog was doing, we were just take him to another hospital. Finally, they took us back to our room where we waited another hour for his x-rays. They told me that he had swallowed a piece of plastic. His condition was worsening.. by this time.. I’m tired, I’m emotional and I’m angry at the wait, They told me that he was going to need emergency surgery. And that it was going to cost $6k! I couldn’t make payments and that didn’t even include what I had just paid for the x-rays ($575) obviously I know with being a pet owner comes financial responsibilities. I asked them what my options are? They pretty much had no empathy for me and told me that I should’ve thought about that before I got a Frenchie. no bedside manner, no compassion that this is our family member. I left without doing the surgery and decided to look for other options. I took Apollo back to Metro on Monday and basically begged them to help me. He was lifeless. I spoke to Haley who works for Metro. She gave me a list of more affordable options and told me to tell them that we were calling from Metro and most places would try to see what they could do. She told me that she would not take her pet there and that she could not afford services from Metro for her own pet. It felt like I called 1 million places, but I finally reached Porter Pet Hospital! Right off the bat Taylor, who answered the phone told me that no matter what the cost was they would work with me to save Apollo’s life! She told me that all they needed was the x-rays from Metro and they would be able to give me a price on how much they could do Apollo’s surgery for. After calling Metropolitan all day they did not answer.. I left work on Tuesday and went up there and they told me that because it had been more than 24 hours that I had to take another x-ray (Another $575.00) but I was desperate. Apollo had not ate or drink anything since Friday at this point… Because Metropolitan NEVER sent over the x-rays..Apollo started to decline rapidly he needed the surgery and immediately. By this time, it was Tuesday night and Porter could not take him until the morning, but his condition had worsen so much that at the advice of Porter. They said that I should admit him at Metropolitan for the night until they could do the surgery the next morning. I had no choice but to admit him to Metro, I picked him up at 7 AM the next morning. ($1300 for one night) and rushed him to Porter Pet Hospital. From the minute that we walked in the door, they were nothing short of amazing. They put me at ease and let me know that they would do everything to save Apollo. Apollo was in the hospital for three days and the emergency surgery and it didn’t even cost a third of what metropolitan was trying to charge me!! But not only that the entire time he was there the staff at Porter Hospital reached out to me regularly! Sending me text messages and pictures of Apollo and how he was doing… I cannot tell you how thankful I am for Porter Pet Hospital for saving our baby 🥰 I would not recommend Metropolitan veterinary hospital to anyone under any circumstances! We bought stainless steel bowls 🤦🏼‍♀️ I really don’t know what I would do without this boy 💙

This place gets it! They fully understand that our pets are like family members (that we like😁) and emotions can run high when we bring our furry friends in to be seen. Dr. Brown saw my grand dog Tessa and de-escalated an emotional situation very quickly. Dr. Brown outlined the situation, gave me options and put a plan in motion to take care of Tessa – who is depending on me to do the right thing. I can't say enough good about Dr. Brown – I only wish there were 10 stars instead of just five!!!
