How to Save Money at Herkimer Veterinary Associates - West Winfield

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

West Winfield Vet Associates is hands down the friendliest most professional clinic I’ve been to in years.. we first came to WW vet in august when my pup Hercules fell really sick.. We were previously at Waterville vet before and they made us run around for three months misdiagnosing my poor sick boy.. he went from 98lbs to 46lbs in a span of 3 months.. Waterville was micro dosing my Hercules for months… they aren’t cheap either and I understand that it’s expensive to have animals, but when a vet is making you do loops running around random tests micro dosing and not explaining anything to the owners you get frustrated. I told Waterville I would be getting a second opinion because nothing they were doing was working.. not to mention every visit I had I was maybe there for twenty minutes max, they NEVER would take the time to talk to Me and help me understand what was going on with my dog. watching my dog deteriorate slowly made it so much worse. As a dog mom I thought I had failed my boy.. My first time at West Winfield I’ll never forget. I brought all my paperwork from Waterville and Dr. Greene was assigned to our Hercules. There was a lot of paperwork from Waterville.. Dr. Greene one word for that women.. compassionate. Dr. Greene saw how distraught I was over all of this and our first appointment we were there for two hours.. she sat down and talked to me like an actual human being. Someone was finally listening to me. I was being heard and how I felt about his last treatments at Waterville. Dr. Greene saved my Hercules and I will forever be so so grateful for her and the staff at west Winfield, after his diagnosis Dr. Greene referred us to Latham Internal Specialists to see Dr. Arnold and off we went. Hercules was diagnosed with a Protein losing enteropathy.. he’s doing amazing since being on the meds & He’s up to 55 lbs and we can’t wait to see Dr. Greene again! We love you Dr. Greene!!!!

Sorrell wasn't the best patient, but they certainly tried to accommodate her. Excellent care.

We had to euthanize our dog and they came out to the car and she dated him and then gave him the shot and all of our family were there. It was the best of a bad situation. They were very caring and confident and accommodating.

I wish there were more stars to give this veteranarian service. I live a good distance from their location. It is well worth the drive. They are extremely friendly to both me and my pup. He has bowel issues and in addition needed all his shots. The vet and assistant did their best to calm him but like a baby he didn't like the shots and scream yelped during the rectal exam. I cried just hearing my new puppy yelp in pain. They saw me and reassured me he was okay. I am disabled and use a walker. I've been back throughout the season for checkups, weigh ins, shot updates and the secretary saw me come in with the puppy and said " well, you're looking better" ,I assumed she meant my pup. Nope she meant ME, in reference to me walking better. AsxI said at the start, they're extremely friendly and genuinely care about the customer as well as the pet! They have a team of vets ,not just one or two. They try their best to accommodate your schedule, no excuses for sending you to Syracuse or Latham for emergency vet services. I fully understand if it was indeed an emergency, but not because of vacation times and being unavailable. They have my business from now on!
