How to Save Money at Town & Country Veterinary Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Tried called the vet for the 3rd time today and got turned away apparently freedom of speech is not aloud. I express my concerns with them turning me away 3 times in two days when I was told my dog would get help from there clinic just to turn around and not assist. They said they would get her in if I called the Ogdensburg clinic. I called and called and called and nobody answered due to me leaving a messag that I don't appreciate being told they would get me in just to turn me away. I go to call again today to make an appointment and the vet doctor herself said she is refusing to give my dog service ever again due to me giving her a bad review! If someone gives you a bad review and gives you the chance to fix it maybe you should try and fix it over turning them away out of anger! What disgusting people I have ever met. And the worst part is they keep hiding my reviews so the world can't see! Own up to what you did! Lies to me about taking my dog just to turn us away and then turn us away again! I drove 4 hours to save her life and the least you can do is clean her wound after her surgery but no why would you do that. To salty bc I gave you my honest opinion! Sad little people!!!

My chihuahua has been an annual patient at the Massena location for 10 years. I recently moved to Potsdam and scheduled her 1st annual at this location in February. She has chronic dental issues and recently has developed runny eyes that have been staining her face with great crust. Which I suspected from the recent relocation to an area that uses a lot of chemicals on their lawns. The vet or tech that saw her in January assured me she was fine. Even my concerns of her dental needing attention which in her opinion was not a concern . However it is not urgent. I trusted her instance and Felt slightly relieved as she prescribed an eye wash and a drop for her eyes that did not help at all. I just learned recently from the humane society groomer that indeed her teeth are an issue and she should be treated for eye allergies. I am firing that vet/tech . Shame after 11 years working with town and Country and yearly major oral surgeries on my little dog you go dark on us pet owners. Shame on you. Don’t blame your poor treatment on Covid. It’s sad to say that this community will see your clinics closed in the next five years… or taken over by a more malevolent corporate pet care facility.

Wonderful place and people. Great at all stages of life. 2 of my cats and my dog love them. My 3rd cat is scared of everything. My dog, Izzy, always went crazy when she had an appointment. She had to greet everyone and they always took time show her some love. They don't give you false hope. They are straight forward. When it came to Izzy's end of life care, they were so caring. I have had absolutely no problems with this place. I highly recommend them and will continue to use their services for my furbabies in the future.
