How to Save Money at Plattsburgh Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Not very happy with this veterinarian anymore. I bought my dog in, because she has been getting ear infections, and a family friend who is a vet in another area has been helping, but they haven’t gotten any better, so I bought her here because it’s the vet we have used for her and other animals we’ve had in the past.I don’t know what has changed, but this will be the last time I bring any of my pets there. First, one of the ladies at the front desk at check in is giving a crazy amount of attitude to the man in front who was there to pick up a prescription refill. Then when I’m checking in they ask if my dog is up to date on her rabies shot which I told them multiple times she is up to date and has had one within the last year. We get called into a room and the lady who is taking to us is great. Very nice, polite, and great with my dog. Then the doctor comes in, and he looks at her, and pretty much tells us to do what we’ve been doing, but also prescribes an oral antibiotic. Which is fine, but then gives her a shot. I ask him what that was and he says it’s her rabies vaccine. Yes, the one I told them multiple times that she was up to date on. Than at checkout they give me all the medication (two of which we have at home, and the lady at checkout has an attitude as well. I don’t know what has changed at this place, but it is pretty much run like an assembly line now, they don’t listen when you tell them your animal is up to date on their shots, and everyone except the first lady we seen in the room had an attitude, or made it seem they couldn’t be bothered with the questions you had, or what you were saying. Definitely finding a new place to take my animals. If you are reading this, and are looking for a vet in the area. Move on and go somewhere else. This place is not what it used to be, and unless they get new people (except the one lady) I don’t see anything getting better here….

We were visiting from out of town when we noticed that our Labrador Roxy had blood in her urine. We phoned this practice and she was able to be seen within 24hours. The vet tech Elizabeth, Dr. Carla Weaver, and Kelsea were amazing. They were very informative and thorough. Best of all they were so kind and caring with Roxy. They made sure we knew that if we needed anything further on our vacation to call and they would help in any way that they could. The front staff was very helpful also. I would highly recommend this practice to anyone that is needing care for their pets.

I have always depended on the Plattsburgh Animal Hospital for my pets care. Not Anymore! I recently recommended them to a family member. The front desk receptionist was absolutely rude, and unprofessional. We unfortunately had to put this dog down, and that is why we were there. They brought the dog and my family member into a room....and left them there for 45 minutes...the dog struggled, and died on her own. We went there to help her, so she did not have to struggle. I am absolutely disgusted with the care we did not receive. They quickly gave us the money back...ran back inside, and went about their day. Heart broken at the lack of compassion...never again!

I love this hospital because they are open 24/7 for my animals, and other peoples animals. I do not have to drive to Vermont in a emergency for my fur babies if I went somewhere else. I love the doctors at this vet friendly, show love and compassion for my babies. The prices are a little higher but when I had an emergency they were the same as a regular visit. Which they actually went above and beyond for me. I was dog sitting, amd the dog wasn't a patient of the practice but because I was and the dog was in my care they helped me. That fur mama was so happy she became a lover of their practice as well and brought their animals over to this hospital. This is where the low star rating comes in I have called a few times for scheduling, and once to ask for advice. The people who answer the phone seem to hate their job. They do not sound happy at all. They are rude, short, and if you come early God forbid they are super annoyed. Ask there name and they pause like you asked a incorrect question. They do not seem personable at all. If they are going to work for a office that deals with the public, and their fur babies at least sound like you care. People like me that are bringing their fur babies in is what provides this business with money. Which pays for you to have a job. Do better. If you are coming just for money and really hate your job leave and find another one. You should never give people the vibe of annoyance, or inconvenience. If this practice didn't shine like they did in the first part of my review I would be gone do to the customer service.
