How to Save Money at Finger Lakes Mobile Veterinary Services

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Dr. Dana Coover with her Partner showed more compassion and empathy for our family guinea pig Oscar then I could have hoped for. Because of our distance from them doctor she agreed to do what she could over a few phone calls and the assistance was far better then you tube university so to speak. Pointed us in the right direction to help our 7 year old guinea thru his difficult time. We wanted to have her invoice us however, they were completely satisfied with knowing the tips worked, dismissing the offer of a payment. Above and beyond, hard to find these days, thank you very much!

Dr. Dana Coover and her Partner exceeded every exception that I could have ever imagined. My friends dog sadly had to be put down at the end of last year due to cancer. When I called Dr Coover I asked her why her euthanasia was so cheap compared to others and her response was "because that is not where I want to make money from is other people's pain" and from that moment I knew when my sweet girls time came that I couldn't think of a better person to make the experience as peaceful as possible for my Maggie Moo. After horrible news from another vets office that told me that my dog had no/low chance at survival and that the best option was to put her down, I took my baby home and reached out to Dr.Coover to set up a home euthanasia and gave her a great few days anticipating the horrible thing that was coming. When Dr Coover and her partner arrived at my home, I laid on the floor crying with my dog all morning. My Maggie Moo put her head in the lap of Dr. Coover and that's when she said that My Moo is a fighter and she's not giving her the look in her eye that she's ready to go yet. She went out of her way to look over all of Maggie's blood work that another vets office said was not something Maggie could probably come back from and Dr.Coover decided that they were. She said she wanted to give Maggie a chance and do surgery to try and save her life. Later that night we brought our Maggie Moo to Dr.Coover with a glimpse of hope that she would pull through.... It's been a week now since surgery and my dog that was supposed to die on the living room floor last week is now snoring next to me on the couch snoring away all because Dr. Coover cares! I also want to add she is doing so well that she is PLAYING again! She hasn't done that in forever! I can't imagine taking my dogs to anyone else from this point on. This truly was a miracle and I owe her my whole existence for saving my dog's life. You will never fine another vet like Dr.Coover!

Dr Coover assisted us when it was time to let our precious dog cross the rainbow bridge. Our dog was only 5, and while her body had failed her, she still had all her mental faculties, so I did not want to take her to the vets office for euthanasia. Dr Coover came to our house, was kind, compassionate, and patient with us. I know beyond a shadow of a doubt that euthanizing our beloved dog in our own home was the greatest kindness we could have shown her. It allowed out sweet girl to pass without any anxiety, surrounded by her family, in a place she was comfortable. It also allowed us to grieve in private. I can’t say how grateful I am to Dr Coover for offering this service. Thank you.
