How to Save Money at Tara Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Our 10 year old Willy is a Maltese mix who has always had a grumpy, but lovable nature. He began to have pee accidents in the house, and I noticed some pinkish blood on the paper towel when cleaning it up. Dr. Gretchen took us in right away, and did an X-ray that showed many stones in his bladder and stones in the ureters and urethra. She took him in for surgery the following morning, and was able to successfully remove ALL the stones. Willy was on pain meds for a week, and was so sweet and not grumpy. We figured he was just feeling good from the pain meds. The pain pills ran out, and he still continues to have “lost” that grumpiness that he’s had all his life. I JOKINGLY asked Dr. Gretchen if she also performed some kind of exorcism during the surgery because Willy is like a different dog. His face looks different because he smiles now. He much more interested in playing with us, and he is finally being nice to our other dog, Jack. I am just so happy and grateful for the amazing care you gave to Willy (as always.) Thank you, Dr. Gretchen and ALL of her staff for taking such good care of Willy. We love all of you. You’re all so dedicated to your patients (and their parents) and that really makes a difference when you know you have such a wonderful team at Tara Animal Hospital who are taking such good care of our dog-babies.🩷🐾

First time seeing Dr Gretchen with my little old girl Stella. We are new to the area and Tara Animal Hospital was recommended to us by a neighbor. I have nothing but positive things to say about this office. I was extremely pleased with my experience, and especially with Dr Gretchen. She was very professional, down to earth, realistic, not pushy and she really listened to my concerns/wants/needs for the care of my pet and wants to work with the pet owner as a part of the team. Her staff is also courteous and kind, and the office is kept immaculately clean and beautiful. I am very happy that we found her to help us manage our pets health!

I can't say enough good things about the staff and the vet at Tara. They were all so welcoming and helpful and understanding when my kitty cat got so nervous she tossed her cookies. I was a little freaked out by it cuz she's never done that in her carrier before but the vet tech didn't flinch.

Getting asked questions that are not relevant for a basic checkup for a cat.. getting told "will check with doctor" and to call back later and check instead of just receiving a call back.. only to hear they are booked out atleast a month in advance and can't accept a new patient. Like you didn't already know you were booked out that far, right. A sketchy and unprofessional feeling from this small rural practice in just two short phone calls. Edit: reading other reviews this seems to be a common occurrence maybe seek care elsewhere!

I took my puppy, Gina, to Tara’s today! The staff was so welcoming and kind to me and my dog. They made everything easy and fun for Gina at her first appointment! Gina didn’t even flinch when she got her shot! I would highly recommend this wonderful place! Thank you so much for making this first appointment great!
