How to Save Money at Westside Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I bought my male kitten in 2024 to this office via the friend of animals voucher for a neuter. The office was quick to reply for an appointment request and was able to offer me an appointment within a reasonable time (in NJ spay/neuter appointments are booked weeks in advance). After the initial consultation with Dr Perez, who reviewed my cat’s vaccines and did blood work, my cat was able to be neutered the following week. The front desk receptionist was very courteous and kept me up to date on my pet’s condition. My kitten had a quick and easy recovery and was running around playing after three days (of course not recommended) but it’s been a year and all has been well. If I lived in NYC this would be a clinic that I would take my cats for regular visits.

Used Friends of Animals certificate at this location for my cat’s spay back in July. It’s been about a month and my cat recovered beautifully. There is a required pre-exam before the actual appointment, about 2 weeks prior. This is an additional cost not included in the certificate, as well as micro-chip, etc. All total I spent about $700, which is a far cry from my days of using the now defunct-Whisker certificate which totaled to $280 (used at Brooklyn Roots pre-pandemic). Still, the cost I think was worth it given the care, speed and quality of the provider. Low-cost is not necessarily what I would mark them as however. Dr. Perez was a little brisk during the initial exam, but I had a good feeling once I saw how small the hospital was. It seems only a few animals can be housed at a time, which I vastly preferred to a larger hospital. The front attendant was super nice and answered all of my questions when I initially called to get a price estimate. Scheduling was fast and easy, I was able to book same day for appointments within the same month. Dr Perez was excellent at the stitching, and just from previous experience with animals on anesthesia, I have a hunch he didn’t ‘overdo’ it as my cat was groggy but very alert/aware immediately after I picked her up. She was trying to zoom around only a few hours after we got home. By 10-15 days she was completely healed, no hernia or protrusions. Westside is great and I wouldn’t hesitate bringing my cats here again!

Got my 6months old kitten neutered few days ago and I was very satisfied! The assistant at the front desk was very helpful, nice and patient. She answered all of my questions and even called the day after his surgery to check up on him. Dr.Perez was a calm and knowledgeable vet he made me feel at ease. I used a friends of animal certificate here and the additional fees was affordable compared to other places. I would definitely recommend here. Not sure why there is so many negative reviews.

Got my cat neutered here with Friends of Animals certificate. Also got him vaccinated. The staff here was so friendly and very kind to my cat. They were transparent with all the pricing over the phone, and the prices were very reasonable compared to other vets. The man at desk was very cool. It was quick and easy. I recommend going here. The vet was so smart and gave me a bunch of helpful information.
