How to Save Money at Veterinary Surgery Center of NYC

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

My dog mickey was diagnosed with a mass in his rectum that was preventing him from doing #2. We took him to many different places until we arrived to Dr. Hurcombe. We are extremely grateful with all the work he did. He was able to explain the procedure my dog needed in a way that made us feel confident to trust him with our dog. He gave us a detailed estimate of the surgery, to which we agreed and we can not thank him enough. My dog is 11 years old and he is doing great, but most importantly he is now able to do #2 perfectly fine. I would highly recommend Dr. Hurcombe, he is beyond amazing. He and his team did an excellent job with our little mickey.

"I cannot express how grateful I am for the exceptional care and expertise provided by Dr. Sam Hurcombe and the entire team at the Veterinary Surgery Center of New York City. My 1-year-old Golden Doodle, Nela, recently went through a challenging and uncertain health ordeal, and this facility was an absolute lifesaver. From the moment I stepped into their state-of-the-art center, I was met with a level of professionalism and compassion that immediately put my anxieties to rest. Dr. Sam Hurcombe, in particular, is a remarkable surgeon and a true gem in the field of veterinary medicine. His ability to not only diagnose but also communicate the situation with care and precision is commendable. When our initial vet suspected a foreign body issue, I knew I had to seek a second opinion. Dr. Hurcombe's team promptly conducted a repeat X-ray, and with the utmost professionalism and expertise, they confirmed that Nela had no foreign body or obstruction in her stomach. This revelation was a huge relief and saved Nela from unnecessary surgery and us from significant stress. The entire staff at the Veterinary Surgery Center was incredibly attentive, reassuring, and genuinely caring throughout the entire process. Their dedication to Nela's well-being was evident at every step, and the sense of relief I felt knowing my pet was in such capable hands is immeasurable. I would recommend the Veterinary Surgery Center of New York City and Dr. Sam Hurcombe without hesitation. They are a shining example of excellence in veterinary care, and I'm truly grateful for their expertise and the peace of mind they provided during a challenging time. I'll continue to entrust Nela's care to this outstanding team, and I can confidently say they have a loyal client for life."

I would like to thank the staff at Veterinary Surgery Center of NYC for taking such great care of my dog, Peach, when she was in need of a TPLO. They were super communicative and frequently checked in. Dr. Hurcombe seems to genuinely care about his patients as well as their owners. He was knowledgeable and honest when it came to a treatment plan. I’m super appreciative of the support we received from the staff and would return for any future surgical needs for my dog.

Thank you so much! So many nice and great things I can say about Dr. Hurcombe and his team! We appreciated them taking their time and explaining to us exactly what was happening and the solutions available to us (and answering all our questions and concerns)! I loved that at every visit my dog was greeted by his name! We felt welcomed and at ease during our many visits there. They handled a stressful and emotional situation much better by keeping us informed throughout the process. Loved their attention to detail and personalized post care guidelines! Highly recommend VETERINARY SURGERY CENTER OF NYC! Dr. Hurcombe and the team are true gems!

So far they have been very kind to me. I have two 20-week-old puppies they come here since they are 10 weeks old, they have always been treated very well and with great respect. I have always been treated by the same vet techino since my first visit, I don't remember his name but he is very friendly and helpful. In my 4 visits my puppies have only been seen by two different doctors. The first appointment was in the morning and they were attended by a very good doctor who I don't remember her name but she was very professional. My other three visits were attended by dr. Tracy is also very professional and follows all the protocols with COVID prevention. In addition to the receptionist, I don't know her name either, but I was wrong and I arrived thinking that my appointment was for that day and it was actually for the next day and they made a space and cared for my puppies. Really very professional so far. Here is a photo of Max & Mia with the first doctor he attended and the veterinary techino.
