How to Save Money at Sutton Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I’m sharing this review based on a negative experience that left me uncomfortable with the overall environment at Sutton Animal Hospital. While the facility itself may appear professional, the internal culture tells a different story. Much of the staff interaction I witnessed felt discouraging rather than supportive. Mistakes were met with condescension and criticism instead of guidance or constructive feedback. Rather than fostering teamwork and growth, the tone often felt dismissive and demeaning. Additionally, the way some doctors treated their assistants was troubling. Assistants appeared overworked and undervalued, spoken to more like subordinates than respected members of a medical team. This type of environment can take a toll on staff morale and, ultimately, affect the quality of care. For these reasons, I would not recommend bringing pets here. The negative treatment behind closed doors raises concerns about the overall culture of the practice, and I believe a respectful, supportive workplace is essential in any healthcare setting.. especially one caring for animals.

I visited this clinic with my kitten not long after moving into the neighborhood because I wanted to explore a possible new vet. The space is pleasant and most of the staff members are friendly, with the exception of a few. Even so, the place gave me the sense that money matters more to them than the animals themselves, especially when it comes to Dr. Kent Miller. She came across as somewhat cold. The office manager also seemed angry and unpleasant. I’d honestly suggest looking for a vet who shows more genuine care for your pet’s well being rather than focusing on dollar signs.

I needed to handle a semi-complex case with moving my cats, and the staff and doctors here could not have been more knowledgeable. They handled every perfectly, understood all of the required paperwork, had great attention to details, and were very responsive to my various different questions and requests. My cats have been coming here for years. The facility is modern, the doctors are top-notch, and everyone on the staff is friendly and attentive. I would 100% recommend this practice.

Our dog was a patient at this practice when we lived in Manhattan. He always loved coming here. We moved out of state last year and found a new vet and our sweet dog was recently diagnosed with a cancerous lump. We needed quick help from Sutton Animal Hospital to help write a short note clarifying our dog's medical history for our insurance company prior to an urgent next day surgery. I was really taken aback by how callous and cold the receptionist, Julia, was regarding this urgent request. She was more concerned about their "48 hour documentation policy" than helping a former patient during a difficult time. She pretty much just snottily informed us this was not their problem and hung up. About four days after we made the request, they sent us a note, but it was not what we had asked for. I see someone else previously complained about Julia in these reviews and got a rude reply from Sutton Animal Hospital, so Im sure I'll get something similar. But ultimately, Julia may want to consider having more compassion and professionalism in her approach. ----- Updating based on the reply from Lauren - not sure I've spoken to her before but that's exactly the tone/content I anticipated the reply would be in 😂 We both know I didn't demand anything. It's also silly to lie about the times I was sent the documentation because I literally have the timestamps from the calls and emails sent. It's an embarrassing look to be fighting with your customers in the comments instead of accepting feedback and taking the high road. Unfortunately even though the medical staff is very good here, I would recommend avoiding this practice based on their admin staff's attitude towards their customers.
