How to Save Money at Pearly Bites Veterinary

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

My 10 yr old cat was suffering from bleeding gums and had a lot of tartar on her back teeth. We visited her usual vet for consultation and they exaggerated her condition and pushed for immediate dental work, which made me feel very uncomfortable. We came to Dr. Livermore for an initial consultation, she was very patient when listening to my cat’s condition (she had just gotten treated for hyperthyroidism), and was very detailed when explaining her findings of the initial exam and what she recommends. During the initial consultation, she showed that she truly cares about my cat’s dental health which is what made me book the dental right away. After the cleaning and extractions, Dr. Livermore was also very patient and detailed when explaining to me on what to expect for the next few days. The recovering process was tough but my cat pulled through. She’s a lot more cuddly and playful; it’s like she’s 5 yrs old all over again. I am very grateful for Dr. Livermore and her team. If your pet is not in immediate need of dental work, I highly recommend this place!

We had a phenomenal experience getting our dog's teeth examined and cleaned by the professionals here! They're the most organized, efficient, clear, kind and effective vets we've worked with! During the exam, the vet quickly made our dog comfortable (which many vets have not been able to do) and talked us through their recommendation and safety precautions with anesthesia. Before the cleaning, we received clear guidance about how to prepare and pick up. During the cleaning, we received text updates about the process to let us know how it was going, and a phone call afterwards with details. Afterward, we picked up our dog smoothly and on time!

My little cat Goose was adopted from the animal shelter with a really bad case of gingivitis. His regular vet notified us that he would most likely need all of his teeth extracted but referred us to an animal dentist who didn't have appointments until January. After a long time they told me that they had a vet in the city who was willing to do the full mouth extraction but their quote seemed a little extreme so I went to google to search for an alternative. We had our consult with Dr. Livermore in late October and she was so knowledgeable and good at addressing my questions and concerns that I had no doubts with choosing her to perform Goose's dental surgery. Knowing that she had a cat of her own with similar issues to Goose also helped to reassure me and she also gave me some great suggestions for my own kitty's problems. She was very thorough with his mouth exam and pointed out some issues I didn't even know he had in the initial consult. She was also very detailed when giving me his pre-surgery blood test results. I was very confident that he would be in good hands. Goose had his full mouth extraction early November and came out with no issues, though hilariously wonky from anesthesia. And he had a great recovery as well. Now Goose's appetite has improved and eats with much more gusto. He enjoys both kibble and wet food and I'm so grateful to the Pearly Bites team for helping me give Goose a better quality of life. The vet techs Jen and German were very friendly and supportive as well. ❤😺

I can’t praise this veterinary dental clinic highly enough. During a visit with our normal vet clinic, we were told that our pup had grade 3 periodontal disease that would likely require extractions. This was very overwhelming because we were just taking the dog in for a UTI related sick visit, and we were completely blindsided as that same clinic had told us her teeth looked great less than 6 months prior. We take very good care of her and she’s only 5! Our regular vet clinic tried to push us into doing pricey pre-anaesthesia bloodwork that day so we could go ahead and schedule the cleaning ASAP. The estimate they provided was between 1500 and 3800. After doing my own research online I decided to take our dog to Pearly Bites for a second opinion. The staff was incredibly kind, communicative, and transparent about pricing throughout the entire process. The quote they provided seemed much more doable for us, and they seemed a bit more optimistic about Noodles condition. Today Noodles had her cleaning and Dr. Livermore reported she needed no extractions and only had some gingivitis. :) Could not be more pleased with this outcome, and we plan to bring Noodles back every year for a check up (plus keep up her home brushing too!) Thank you Pearly Bites!!

My mambo is a senior dog. The whole experience was great. The whole staff was friendly, compassionate and very knowledgeable. My dog had nine teeth extracted and an infection in his lips. He received the best care ever.
