How to Save Money at Hudson Valley Veterinary Dermatology - NYC
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Cannot recommend Hudson Valley and Dr Budgin enough. Prior to finding Dr Budgin we were at another dermatologist practice in NYC and spent thousands trying to clear our pup Fitzgerald’s skin issues only to have it be worse. After just one visit with Dr Budgin his skin was in better shape with her plan and after his second visit he had completely cleared up! Not only was her plan of action extremely more effective than the other practice but she also showed much more care and warmness towards our pup. We were able to get him a skin allergy test and on immunotherapy under Dr Budgin’s care and his quality of life is so much better. Also want to shout out her staff- they all have always been extremely kind and helpful. Grateful to Dr Budgin and her staff for getting Fitzgerald to a point where he has normal clear skin and can just be the happy go lucky pup he is !!

We have searched high and low for a doctor that can address our Frenchie’s skin needs. Dr Budgin is cautious and careful with recommending unnecessary shots or oral medication unless absolutely necessary. After years of trying a food elimination diet that was not working, Dr Budgin did an allergy test and said we could consider immunotherapy. The process was very smooth and they send it to your doorstep with clear instructions. Bruce has been on immunotherapy for a year along with apoquel and some other minor care instructions for his skin. He hasn’t really had a flare up and summer is usually his flaring up months. It was covered by his insurance. Dr Budgin and her team have been vital in helping Bruce to be comfortable without itchies ! Plus he loveeeees all the vet techs and loves Dr Budgin who calls him Handsome Bruce.

Dr. Budgin has been unbelievably helpful throughout our dog Chia’s lengthy battle with a series of skin conditions, the result of an underlying autoimmune disease that she diagnosed. Chia’s disease has resulted in a number of unpredictable symptoms and Dr. Budgin has worked closely with us to address them carefully, thoughtfully and in a scientific manner each step of the way. Without Dr. Budgin I don’t even want to think about what could have happened to Chia! We are so grateful for the care she and her wonderful team have provided and can feel secure knowing that Chia’s long term health is being monitored by Dr. Budgin.

I highly recommend Dr. Budgin and her team. My little guy had a pretty severe protein allergy that eluded my regular vet for months. He was incredibly itchy, had pink sores on his tummy, recurring ear infections and even lost the pigmentation around his mouth(!!). Dr. Budgin was thorough & invested and got my boy on the mend in no time. No more scratching. No more ear infections. No more pink sores. And pristine, gorgeous black around his mouth and nose. tl; dr Sometimes you need an expert and Dr. Budgin is the expert you want in your corner.

We recently adopted our dog, Miss Molly and took her here hoping to find a solution. Molly had developed extreme itchiness and she’d lick her body day and night until exhaustion. We live in the West Village and go to our regular vet for routine checkups, but realized we needed a second option. So we carefully searched online for vet dermatologist specialists in the city and picked here as our first choice. Nice clean, professional office settings, friendly for dogs and cats, although the waiting room was packed! All staff members were passionate pet lovers and incredibly attentive to Molly. Dr. Budgin’s excellent bedside manner showed us how much she cares about not only Molly, but also us! After our first visit, we had lots to do at home, but now it's been a little over 2 weeks, and Molly is finally at peace. No more itching! 10/10 recommend! Dr. Budgin and her teams dedication and expertise deeply touched us!
