How to Save Money at Harlem Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

My dog Weasley was my heart and soul, so my unwavering trust in Dr. Kiani and her staff says a lot. Weasley was diagnosed with CHF in 2018 and I rushed him into Harlem Animal Hospital under an emergency visit- and I am thankful everyday that Dr. Kiani was working that day. I thought my world was ending, but thanks to her expertise Weasley long outlived his prognosis of 6months-1year resulting in an unexpected extra 4 more happy years together. Weasley was a drama king who always had something wrong with him.. skin problems, possible cushings, seizures. He was a complicated and difficult case and Dr. Kiani went above and beyond for him. Never pushing any unnecessary treatments, always putting his quality of life first. Weasley and I were frequent fliers at Harlem Animal hospital over the last 5 years and Dr. Kiani is the first vet he didn't shiver and panic at! I truly think he grew to understand she was there to help him. Dr. Kiani was even kind enough to come to our apartment so my baby could peacefully pass in his home and in my arms. Having Dr. Kiani as my vet gave me the peace of knowing that Weasley was always in the best of hands, and it also gave me the peace of knowing when it was time to say goodbye, we had done everything humanly possible for him and I could let him go without questioning myself. Dr. Kiani was there for us during the hardest parts of Weasley's life, and gave us so much more time with him then I ever could have hoped, and I will be eternally grateful. And thankful for all his staff who loved and cared for Weasley. You will always be in my heart, just like Weasley.

By far the best veterinarian I’ve ever been to. The whole staff, from Marion in the front to Miracle and Dr Gigi in the back, was lovely! I took my 3 cats there and they were all handled with the utmost kindness and patience — even my feisty calico who wanted to fight everybody that dared to touch her. Finding a new vet can be wary, but I’m beyond relieved to have discovered a business run with so much empathy, professionalism, and sense of community. Now I can’t imagine going anywhere else, especially because on top of it all, this place is the most affordable I’ve ever encountered in all of New York.

Everyone at Harlem Animal Hospital was extremely nice to me and my dog. They facility is clean throughout. Dr. Colon was generous with her time and carefully examined our dog and her prior X-rays. She gave us a conservative treatment plan to start with follow up after 30 days.

This is a wonderful place to take your fur baby. The staff could not be any nicer and the doctor is excellent. Everyone made both me and my dog feel at ease. Moreover, the it is so affordable. My dog will continue to be a loyal patient. I could not rave more about this wonderful place. Highly recommend.

From the first moment I came to this practice, I was amazed by the passion and dedication of the doctors and the thoroughness of their exams. The doctors will explain what they’re doing as they’re doing it and even let you look into your pet’s ear through the ear viewing tool which is something I had never experienced with other vets! It really helps you, as the pet parent, feel in the loop with what’s going on during the exam. Putting your fur babies on medication can be scary but I felt confident doing so with my pets because I know the doctors did all the appropriate testing to ensure their safety. I know the wait can be long but I think that’s going to be an issue at any vet clinic (I would regularly wait 1.5 - 2.5 hours with my previous vet so this wait is nothing in comparison). The reviews here are kinda mixed but I can assure you that the vets at Harlem Animal Hospital will care for your pet more than anywhere else and, at the end of the day, isn’t that the only thing that matters?
