How to Save Money at City Pets

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I Just cannot believe how absolutely wonderful these ladies were with our cat Hayley . We could never have gotten better care for Hayley ANYWHERE else. They were the most caring and kind and gentle females I have ever met. We found hayleys forever vet today and we just fell in love with them for the way they treated her with such amazing care. She literally sang to our Hayley and hayley loved every minute of her singing to her.now what other veterinarian would do that? I dont usually leave reviews But this was a must .If you want the best care for your pet (furbaby) please, please choose city vets! Thank you ladies for just being super super awesome and for all you guys have done to help Hayley get on her way to getting better .our family thanks you both with our hearts & souls .You Guys ROCK ! you are such a Blessing to our Family .Hayley has chosen you as her permanent veterinarian her wish is our command lol welcome to our family and thank you both so so much ❤️🙏🏻

Today my rescue senior cat was completely traumatized as her skeletal frame- she’s maybe 15 pounds- was held down on my coffee table. She was frantically trying to escape and yowling in fright. I have NEVER heard her scream like this .Terror. She was not allowed to escape-she was held down I was told to get a towel to put over her. ( which should have been thought of in the first place) finally she was just too wild in fear , and fought & she escaped. Unfortunately her nails had been just cut!! They knew she was already scared bc they noted her heart was beating very fast and this was before the exam. It was therefore a partial exam, My cat is still petrified and under the bed. I have worked with her for 6 years trying to get her to trust human beings. As a rescue she had gone through 3 other families!!! I do not recommend this company and what made it worse was the pretense they were respecting my cat ( “when she says no it’s no”) when the reality was almost ten minutes of terror for my senior rescue. That was not respect,

Wow! I thought my dogs have always gotten excellent care but City Pets immediately put everyone else to shame. The best quality, most thoughtful, and exceptionally kind care my old guy has ever received. Dr Margo and her team just amazed me.

Dr. Amy Attas saved Yoda's life! Yoda is our 8-year old French Bulldog and he had a terrible experience at another vet in the West Village - we almost lost him at a dental appointment gone wrong!! Dr. Attas was referred to us by a friend. Shortly after Dr. Attas started her house calls at our apartment, Yoda wasn't eating regularly and she noticed Yoda's blood work was abnormal. We took Yoda straight away to Blue Pearl after Dr. Attas called to warn us that this was an urgent matter. Dr. Attas has relationships with the doctors at Blue Pearl and she was able to follow up with them directly. Yoda wouldn't be here if Dr. Attas hadn't caught this abnormal blood work early on. Yoda had an emergency surgery to remove a portion of his liver and his gallbladder which would have ruptured in the imminent future. This is often caught after the fact with dogs, when it's too late!! She's been great with Yoda and always follows up! Not to mention she comes to us so we don't have to Uber Yoda around! Couldn't recommend City Pets more!!

I could not recommend City Pets more highly. (This is the first review I have ever written). Dr. Dalton and her colleague were on time, professional, and most importantly kind and caring in an extraordinary way. Cubby, a semi-feral rescue orange tabby, hadn’t been to a vet in 5 years due to his terror of pet carriers. They put him at ease, administered vaccinations, and trimmed his nails before gently getting Cubby and my other two rescues into carriers for a long move. We couldn’t have done it without you. Thank you!
