How to Save Money at Behavior Vets of NYC
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I jokingly referred to my Behavior Vets sessions as “dog therapy” with friends, but truly after the first session with Claire, I cried tears of relief. Her calm and knowledgeable guidance helped build my confidence with my newly adopted, very shy, very anxious 5 year old dog Maude. She was dealing with a lot of urban anxiety and generalized stress, and I was struggling to help her. Together we learned practical tools to build confidence, counter condition, and have fun together. I feel so much more connected to Maude, and it’s through the work we learned from Claire. She is smart, committed, and funny. Sessions were fun and super helpful. Also, she brought delicious sardine treats and Maude is obsessed. Most importantly I learned how to give Maude the space and comfort to be herself. She is still shy and still nervous but I have a toolkit of games, commands, and protocols to help navigate and mitigate those moments. I recommend Claire and the Behavior Vets team to anyone looking to bond with their dog, regardless of behavior issues. Dog therapy for all people!

We came to Behavior Vets of NYC for aggression problems with our younger dog. He suddenly became aggressive towards our oldest dog and it was becoming challenging to leave them in the same house. We had the pleasure of working with Rikke, and she was an absolute angel! Over the course of just a few sessions we saw immediate results. She had so many great training tips and fun games to work with our dog. Our dogs are now happily playing with one another, and we couldn’t be happier with the results. If anyone is on the fence about whether behavioral training will work, I strongly encourage you to try a few appointments with Rikke. She took genuine interest in our situation, and helped us find a training plan that worked for our home lives. Thank you Rikke for working with Zeus! You’ve given us peace and happiness in our home.

We worked with Ettel and she was AMAZING! We were in the process of relocating to Germany and needed to crate train our dog (Gadget), as he had to fly in cargo due to his size. Gadget had a huge fear of crates and used to cower, shake, pant and claw at the door. We hadn't crated him in several years because of this. Plus, a case of separation anxiety. How could he possibly deal with an almost 8 hour flight? Ettel walked us through each step of training him to become comfortable with the crate and we had an incredibly successful flight! Gadget took it all like a PRO!!!! And... shockingly enough, he actually still likes his crate and even sleeps inside sometimes! I was so nervous about flying our dog and Ettel gave us (and Gadget!) such confidence. I cannot speak more highly of our sessions with her... and on top it all, our sessions were done virtually due to COVID-19, so don't let that stop you - her tactics work! Thank you so, so, much Ettel, we are forever grateful.

I have a fearful rescue dog, who’s fear and aggression started to get out of hand and more serious. The entire team has been amazing! So compassionate, supportive, and non-judgmental. They are highly qualified and provide evidence-based training and strategies to help your beloved pet. All using positive reinforcement. They work closely with you to help implement training and changes in your dogs life to improve both you and your dogs quality of life. There have been numerous times I thought I would have to give up my dog due to his behavior. Thanks to the support of Jeanne, Dr.Spano, Ettel and Johnson I now have hope for my little boy. Seeing him improve and feel more comfortable with the world around him is heart warming. If you're looking for help with your pet, then I can not recommend them highly enough. I wish I had taken my dog to see them sooner!

Dr. C has been a godsend for my fearful dog. Not only did Dr. C identify why my dog's anxiety increased substantially, but she crafted an easy to adopt plan that has my dog back to his sweet self pain-free. Overall, Dr C has always been available when I needed her and I can't say enough good about the Concierge Care offering with its various training options too many to list. Both my vet and animal behaviorist rave about her and now I too can sing her praises. Thanks Dr. C!!
