How to Save Money at West Hills Animal Hospital and Emergency Center

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

West Hills is the best animal hospital I've been to. They always take care of my dog so well and are very knowledgable. He's not even scared to go in! I've never had issues with billing, wait time, or anything else. Thanks to all the staff for everything they do. ❤️ Shoutout to Dr. Irma, Dr. Sauer, Kezelle, Jordy & Sarah!

I took my family dog here about a month ago to get put to sleep. The vet who performed the euthanasia was so extremely kind and he told us what to expect going into it and was just so supportive and sweet. So much so that I decided that I was going to switch my other dog, Molly, over to this vet for regular checkups. I went here yesterday for the first visit and we saw Lindsey Shoop. She was SO incredibly sweet & knowledgeable. She saw that Molly was super anxious and so she got on the floor with her to get acclimated. I also found it impressive that she read through the medical records I had transferred from the previous vet BEFORE coming into the room to meet Molly. She was very thorough in her exam and answered all of my questions. I'm so happy I switched Molly over to WHAH and look forward to continue using them as her vet.

There are not enough words to express the gratitude that I have for West Hills Animal Hospital. They helped us during a time in our lives that we had new puppies that were born and needed serious attention. Thanks to them, we still have our baby and a healthy mama! West Hills provides the quality of care that you’d want for your pets and they deliver that care with passion. Thanks a million guys

I can’t tell you enough how much I appreciate the care that all of the staff provides at West Hills. For the times I’ve needed immediate help or regular check ups, they’ve always been there for my pup and overly accommodating. Yesterday, my dog ate a chocolate chip cookie and Andy helped me over the phone. Andy was so kind and patient. He actually made me laugh to ease my tension and worry. You are an absolute treasure, Andy! And so is everyone else at West Hills!

Was charged $35 to hold my appointment and was told it would go towards the exam fee, nope! Was charged for the entire exam fee and when I called around 1pm to dispute it I was told they were going to talk to their manager and get back to me…4 hours later I called back only to be told again they were going to talk to their manager and call me right back. Did you not talk to the manager 4 hours ago like you told me? Never got a call back still waiting to be credited back. Don’t trust this facility. Scam artists. Update: I have a pending credit in my account now. Still never received a call back, never received an apology. So glad this is how you handle your mistakes, I do not feel like a valued client as there was absolutely zero communication and no effort put into disputing this. I will not be returning to this vet. 2nd update: I was finally given a call back an hour AFTER I wrote my review, where I was NOT given an apology, only asked if I was refunded the money (which is still pending) and if everything was okay. Seems like you only care about a bad review, not providing your clients with honest, professional and timely service. I brought my 10 week old puppy for his second round of vaccines and was told I needed to wait 3 weeks in between vaccines, not 2?? so I would have to come back and pay another exam fee. This is clearly a money hungry facility. Somebody here keeps calling me from a blocked caller ID as well. I have no desire to continue to be a client here after the way I was treated. I would love to know when I was dishonest ANYWHERE within this review. Disgusting way to treat clients.
