How to Save Money at West Hills Animal Hospital & Emergency Center

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Caution. This practice's negligence and unethical actions were the result of our beloved Roxy's death and were not the first family to experience a fatal adverse outcome as you can see from previous negative reviews. On 6/14 the on-call doctor performed a spay procedure on our Teacup Yorkie and the attending veterinarian was adamant to discharge her the next day. We should not have listened to their advice. We took her home and called the practice shortly after a couple of times for concerns of her coughing and having trouble breathing. The tech just kept saying, As I told you, this is normal. Within minutes, while on the last phone call with them, Roxy stopped breathing. We immediately tried giving Roxy CPR and ran her to the nearest ER. The ER could not save her... The tech exerted no empathy, concern or compassion and never called back to follow up. We called the practice several times the next day after she died to speak to the doctor who performed the surgery and had left messages. The medical director called hours later that afternoon and said, while coughing is a normal reaction during post op, it sounds like she must of had a blood clot. Symptoms of a blood clot in dogs are coughing and difficulty breathing. Roxy was only 2 pounds. Not once during any of the calls did the practice advise to bring her back in immediately or to bring her to a nearby ER. Our family is distraught from this horrifying tragedy. Please consider this traumatic experience from one pet parent/family to another.

Our cat swallowed a string that was about a foot and a half long on Easter. We researched this, and read that this could be very dangerous. Being Easter, our regular vet was not open. We took our cat to West Hills Animal Hospital right away. We were so grateful that they are open 24 hours, every day. The staff is very kind and attentive, the doctor who treated our cat was very knowledgeable and answered all of our concerns. We did not feel rushed at all. The fee was very reasonable, especially for such short notice. Our cat is doing well, thanks to West Hills.

DO NOT TRUST THE REVIEWS! I came to West Hills because the reviews were so great, only to have a HORRIBLE experience. They told me my dog needed a low dex test and a urinalysis to confirm if my dog had Cushing’s. Since I knew another vet that did the urinalysis for a cheaper price, I asked if I could have this test taken off for my appointment. This was confirmed by two separate receptionists and when I called the third time, I was told they didn’t know what I was talking about and that my appointment had been cancelled. After they convinced me to do both the low dex test and urinalysis at their site on a rescheduled appointment, my baby came with a huge wound on her chin. Once she was diagnosed with Cushing’s, I asked the vet if I could get an email with more information on my dog’s health so I could know what to be wary for. I was told, “We don’t do handouts.” I have cried multiple nights because this hospital’s cold and uncaring attitude, plus their receptionists’ incompetency in doing basic tasks. I have not yelled or demanded for things, and I have always waited patiently. Yet I have never been treated with the respect, that not only a customer deserves, but a human being deserves. Empathy is not a finite resource, and people who work at a place filled with animals should already know this. Unfortunately, the folks at West Hills don’t. DO NOT GO HERE.

I cannot thank West Hills Animal Hospital enough for saving my dog Bliss's life. When we brought her in, we were terrified, but the team acted quickly and efficiently, getting her in for life-saving surgery right away. Dr. Sauer was amazing- so kind, compassionate, and thorough. He explained everything in detail and provided us with frequent updates, which really put our minds at ease during such a scary time. Maddox explained the after-care schedule to me and sent me home with thorough paperwork and medication routine. The entire staff was incredibly supportive, and we felt like Bliss was in the best possible hands. We are so grateful for their expertise and care. Thank you, West Hills Animal Hospital, for giving us our sweet Bliss back!

Notgonna Say

Kind, caring, patient, clean and reasonably priced. They saved my dogs life, and were incredibly sweet to him. Danielle and Amy, vet techs, gave him so much love he seemed to want to stay. - Susan from Lindenhurst. I would travel here for their care. I have wished for one more hour with my deceased dog. They gave me more time- he has congestive heart failure, and had fluid in his lungs, but I can have him for another 6-12 months, maybe more. GO HERE. BEST VETERINARIAN ON LONG ISLAND! THANK YOU.
