How to Save Money at Wiley's Ark Animal Care

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

My baby George had a tumor and five teeth removed and a small cyst on his leg. They were very caring and professional. They kept me informed about his procedure and his recovery and answered all my questions and concerns.

Our dog was bloated and constipated. She was laying on her side and couldn`t move. We called the office at 8:00am as soon as they opened. They told me that they didn`t have time and to call urgent care. We called urgent care and they told us it would be 4-6 hour wait. We loaded our dog in the car and drove over to Wileys. I went in and asked if they please had just a few minutes to look at her. She said "we don`t have the time". I walked out and drove to East Avenue Vet clinic in Brockport, and they said they didn`t have time and we were not a customer. Our dog died in the car in the parking lot. She was still alive at Wileys Ark but they had no time. Our dog Shiloh has been going there since she was 2 years old. We took her to all of her well visits etc. but when it came time to actually help Shiloh, they had no time. Do not put yourself through what we went through. If you aren`t a customer there, please don`t go. If you are, keep in mind that in an emergency, Dr. Wiley "wont have time"..It`s a shame that our 8 year old dog could still be alive if "Doctor" Wiley just had the time.

Wiley's Ark serves its community in a very unique way. We have gone to them previously with our small pets, but not with our dog, having established him with another local vet. But when we knew it was time to let go, his vet did not do house calls and we wanted him comfortable at home in his final moments. It took a phone call, a transfer of his records from his vet to Wiley's office and we had an appointment the very next day. I was able to hold our boy and be at his side through the entire 20 minute procedure as he left us. It was a peaceful way for him to go instead of scared in a vets office. For us, every penny counts. Wiley's based our final cost on our dog's weight and length of travel, rather than a flat rate like other local agencies. It was far more affordable than we imagined. Only $80 more than an in office visit with his regular vet. Far less stress on us and our old boy who could barely walk, let alone get in to and out of a vehicle. If you have to make this difficult choice for your family pet, definitely call them. Do not let what you imagine the cost might be keep you from asking. They will surprise you with their reasonable pricing and understanding that this sort of event should happen in the comfort of your home, not in an office where they then send you out to drive upset and emotional over your loss. They did offer a zippered bag and a paw print, that we declined. But it is a wonderful addition for those who want them.

I've been bringing my 8+ pets here of various species for the last couple years. I've enjoyed my visits, I find Dr Wiley to be a very thorough and caring doctor, who will give you multiple options of treatment depending on your pets illness. Her staff is very competent, engaging and helpful. They offer a quaint, warm environment where you feel like your the only patient while your there. The Dr and staff will make sure all your needs are addressed before you leave. They will then follow up with you for several days after your visit to make sure things are going well. I would challenge anyone with to find a better doctor and more caring office to look out for the best interest of your pets.
