How to Save Money at Geneseo Veterinary Care

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

We needed to put our 15 yr old puppy put to sleep peacefully and wanted her to be in her own home and comfortable. This vet required everyone to be vaccinated with a vaccine that does not protect you from the virus nor does it make you immune from spreading the virus. I would never trust a veterinarian who believes in this dogma.

My cat was experiencing a non-life threatening medical emergency. Our normal vet in Rochester could not see him but urged us to seek same day treatment. I am not exaggerarting when I say I called every vet and emergency clinic in Rochester, none of which were able to see us. So stressful! Thankfully, Geneseo was able to squeeze us in. I will say I was taken aback when the staff asked for a $250 deposit over the phone prior to my arrival. I've never paid more than a $150 fee for an emergency visit and normally it's due upon completion of the appointment, not prior. Other reviews mentioned this - which I read after the fact - but the highest I saw was $150. I paid the fee as there were no other feasible options at the time, then made the 30 minute drive to the clinic. Aside from that, we had a positive experience. The staff members were great - my cat got car sick on the ride over and they graciously cleaned him, his blanket, carrier, and even gave us a clean towel to make his trip home more comfortable. Dr. Wisser was very kind and made swift work to resolve the issue, for which I am grateful. Despite the cost, I am relieved to know my cat is safe and healthy.

I was there a little over a week ago with my Guinea pig for a lump he had on his neck. The staff there was so understanding, and they were able to figure out that he had an infected tooth that resulted in an abscess. They were able to remove his tooth and drain his abscess in a reasonable amount of time and for a fair price. Throughout the whole process they were very attentive and compassionate, and they continued to answer any questions I had about him after we had left the facility, whether it was through the phone or email. I would definitely recommend this vet for any Guinea pig owners out there!

Don't go there, they operate a scam business. I made an appointment for my 14+ year old yellow lab My wife was told if we were 10 minutes late we wouldn't get our $150 payment they required before they would see her. We planned on being very early. Lucy (our lab) at this age struggles and gets very anxious getting in the car beside she weighs 100#. Fortunately she seemed better and we were going to wait and not put her through this. We cancelled the day before, 21 hour before her appointment and I was told we wouldn't get our money back due to their policy (24 hour notice to cancel). This "policy" was never told to us. I said we are cancelling due to compassion for our dog I would expect you would want this for any animal you care for. She told me she "understood", I told her no you don't and if this were to happen to you, you wouldn't be happy or feel this is fair. It looks like they do a busy business in that you have to wait over a day to have your pet seen. They obviously filled my appointment slot and made double for that time. I have read a few other reviews with very similar complaints. They make a lot of money scamming people for giving no service. My next complaint will be with the better business bureau. They should have an f rating. DO NOT USE THEM!!!!!

Cannot say enough amazing things about this place! I found Geneseo Veterinary Care after my hedgehog Petrie needed emergency care that her primary vet was unable to perform. They were able to take her on as a new patient immediately. Dr. Wisser worked with my veterinarian back home and performed further testing and was able to schedule her surgery right away. Petrie was found to have an endometrial polyp and her extremely delicate surgery was handled flawlessly. Petrie had boundless energy immediately after and there were no complications post-op. From the reception staff, to the vet techs, to Dr. Wisser herself, this team was worth every penny (very fair pricing, too) and our drive of 2 hours each way. They took the best care of my little girl and gave me their time and patience in explaining everything and answering any questions I had (there were a lot). This team is made up of nothing but angels. To Dr. Wisser and all the girls there, Petrie and I are forever grateful.
