How to Save Money at Rockaway Animal Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

One of my pets had problems walking so I took it to this vet, they made us wait half an hour and when I asked them to help me clean my pets fur they refused and told me to give them 1,000+ dollars first along with other things I did not ask for. All they did was stare at my pet and said they did not know what was wrong, they suggested to euthanize but now a few days later my pet seems fine. When I got home that day I managed to clean my pets injuries and found that it had a skin disease, something so simple and this vet failed to see. All they care about is your money and not your pets life.

If I could give this place a negative 5 star reviews I would this hospital is horrible they actually don't care about your pets here they just worried about your finances and will charge u unnecessarily. I brung in my dog they was examining him for his eye thats when we find out he got pink eye. The doc there said my dog was overweight my dog was 97 lbs and need to go on a diet and said he needed to lose 40lbs which I found was too much cause his healthy weight should be 87lbs the doc was listening to his heart and said he had a heart murmor in the meanwhile a nex doc was askin how could u listen to that stethoscope which puzzled me and then refer us to the main location in valley stream which was 24/7. My dog had got extremely sick we had to eventually take him in cause he had bloody diherra stool which cause him to get bad anemia and other problems with his gi tract. They took the blood works then say they gonna call us back in for the results it took them a very long time for us to get the results back then they final called us back saying he needed to be admitted then we learned my dog needed a blood transfusion but in order to do that he would had to get a ultra sound and xray we went the night they said that the person that do the ultra sound was not available for 2 days and some how lost my dogs blood works but they wanted to admit my dog and basically just die there. All they did there was just giving random estimates for you to spend ur money. If you love your animal STAY FARRR AWAY!!! There only interest is just in your money not the love of your pet.

I purchase a dog from Victor at perfect pets who referred me to rockaway's veterinarian they had me waiting extremely long just to give my baby a bordetella shot I told him he was gagging like choking they checked his temperature deworm him clean his ears and said he was fine in addition to his neutering incision having a small cyst alongside of it filled with fluid that they would keep an eye on but he was good they sent him home with no medication for his upper respiratory infection which is what I believe he has and still have they told me that they would give me a bottle of the air cleaner and come to find out they charge me for it in addition to some flea and tick and heartworm they sole me or whatever that cost me $199 which I am going to return both of the products nor will I be returning back there to have my dogs cared for in any way shape or form they never returned my paperwork for My Dawgs because I also have brought my female Yorkie there to be vaccinated they drew blood to check for worms costed me $51 she was giving a bordetella 7 + 1 + rabies once my baby got home she just wasn't the same possibly because of the vaccination but whatever the case may be I also was told that my older Yorkie teeth needed Dental attention they gave me an estimate of a bill clearly over $2,400 so I stated for that kind of money there should be some sort of health insurance for the animal which the veterinarian said that there was however considering my dog already has the issues the cost wouldn't be covered I beg to differ from that however the place is horrible I would agree that they are money hungry and their interest is not in your pet I would agree with others to say that if you want your animal to be cared for stay far far away from rockaways veterinarian and don't purchase any pets from perfect pets Victor he'll sell you a sick dog like he did me and they neutered my dog under 3 months that I purchased prior to receiving him he was pre-ordered they neutered him without my consent at perfect pets and I was giving a dog with an upper respiratory infection already neutered

Greedy and over priced. If you care about your pet it's best to go to a vet that is an hour or two away. Trust me it will be worth it.
