How to Save Money at Elmhurst Animal Emergency Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

They need to stop describing this place as a 24-hour ER for animals. There's only one vet who is there part of the week. When he's there he does provide great vet service but you have to get into the habit of calling first to make sure that will actually be there. No overnight service. For the vet services you receive it's good but this should not appear in listings with other truly 24-hour emergency room vets.

24hrs?? We drove there, and right before we arrived with a dog that was hit by a car, bleeding.. we called to tell them we are coming - they say they have no vet in call?!? And they are not open?! Wasted critical time to save this pups life. We just hope Lizzy makes it!

I went here after my dog had gotten bitten/ attacked at the park. First, I went to blue pearl and they said it was going to be a 5 hour wait. So I frantically went to the next closest animal Hospital. Luckily they were able to take him right away. I can’t thank the nurse and Doctor enough for being so patient with me when I was in crisis mode. The nurse patiently explained everything that had to be done and why. They took great care of him and he healed beautifully. Thank you!!!

It's really unfair that this facility got such low rating. I have been living right across the street for 10years, and the last time I brought my cat to emergency, i specific avoid this place because of the low rating. But today, this place is the best choice since it's just 2 min from my aprtment and my cat can't wait. First of all, the front desk is amazing. I called 5am in the morning, a guy pickup, he sounded tired but really polite, telling me the facility is not 24h anymore due to covid. I walked in around 10am, the girl is professional, considerate, warm and thoughtful, way much better than the ones in my regular vet's office. second, the vet saw my cat immediately after i brief the nurse about what's going on. No waiting. He's very detailed, asked about all possible facts, exam the cat, and asked me to keep him posted. third, honestly the price is very reasonable for an emergency, which is beyond my expectations. I really think this place deserve better review scores.

My dog was showing signs of being in a lot of pain and discomfort so I brought him here being that its the closest to me & was open 24 hours. Upon arrival the doors were locked and no one at the front desk. So I called the office until a nurse showed up to let us in. We walked in and the entire waiting room area smelled of marijuana. The nurse or receptionist was reacting soooo slow which made it obvious he was high. He asked me “you’re here because of your dog?” DUH what else would bring me here?! Then he proceeded to print something out on the computer which took about 2 minutes where we were standing there wondering what was going on. Then he finally said “there is no doctor in tonight you can go to Blue Pearl” and gave us a sheet with the address. So ridiculous. 2nd time coming to this place and theres no doctor available.
