How to Save Money at Riverdale Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Debbie is amazing! She works at the front desk. She helped me get through a very difficult time and helped say goodbye to my fur baby. I am eternally grateful for her kindness

I am a new owner to a beautiful french bully pup. I came here because of a rash she was experiencing and I was scared since she is only 4 months. After walking in and explaining that she was bleeding from how much she was scratching, they immediately brought her in. I didn't have alot of money to get all the necessary work done, but he made sure he gave her creams, antibiotics and tips on what to do next for an affordable fee. I leftt feeling positive about this new role I took on.

The people who work here truly care for your pets. I called late on a Saturday for a walk-in appointment and they were the only ones that took me in. And they did it with a smile. They took their time and made sure my pet was well taken care of. This is my new vet for now on.

I'll start by saying that although my experience wasn't positive, I truly do hope others have a better experience with this vet. My dog's results showed her bilirubin and protein were very minimally above normal range. Vet prescribed a diet for renal support, which my new vet has mentioned is strange because her levels didn't warrant it, especially because no blood work was done. In one visit, she needed a bit of IV and (I echo comments others have made) I found that they shaved the hair in that spot to put the IV. Surprisingly? My new vet has drawn blood and all, without the need to shave. I personally like to have a copy of all results for my pet and unfortunately at this vet, you don't get them unless you request them. Vet would usually call me and tell me the results. But that was all. In one instance, my dog tested positive for a parasite and needed to be treated. I didn't hear about this until 2 days after the results came back, and it was because I called. The vet claimed he called me but that the number didn't go through. What I found is that when you challenge him on things, he resorts to excuses. When I mentioned that my dog sometimes vomits bile, his go-to response was always to say I should give her Pedialyte, instead of suggesting we get to the bottom of what was causing it. I will give credit where due: the receptionist there is incredibly helpful and always went above and beyond to help. The vet is also a nice person, I just have issues with his professionalism. All things said, I do wish Riverdale Animal Hospital the best and I hope things improve, and others have more pleasant experiences.

So thankful for Riverdale Animal Hospital. My cat, Cleo, was vomiting for 2 days. And this was the only vet available yesterday. I went as soon as I called and they immediately took her in. The receptionist was so kind and friendly, and they have the cutest cats living there. The Vet, Dr. Cedeno, was so warm and sweet with Cleo. He took such great care of her. You can tell he truly loves animals. She was running a fever and dehydrated when we got there, and when I picked her up a few hours later, she was fever free and hydrated and has to take antibiotics for you to week. Today, No more vomiting and she's eating her food with no issues. My sweet girl is healthy again.
