How to Save Money at VCA Lakeside Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

This was my first time here and I have to say that I was impressed. Everyone on staff was kind and attentive. The doctor actually listened to me and treated me like an equal. The techs were kind and efficient. I will be bringing all of my cats there from now on. A special call out of Todd, the receptionist. That man was on. top. of. it. The waiting area was full of people, yet he kept his cool. He handled multiple things at once, acknowledged everyone individually, and treated everyone with the same grace and patience while keeping his sense of humor.

ABSOLUTELY recommend Dr. Gonzalez and the staff. Amazing experience. My dog needed to be seen urgently and they were able to get us in when no other vet could. They were very communicative. The amount of care they took was outstanding! Dr. Gonzalez called to check up multiple times. He even called to relay some labs. Not his assistant he did. I think that shows the care and dedication that he has. In all honesty this experience has restored my faith in Doctors still giving a damn. I also need to add they gave my dog a stuffy on her first visit!

This Veterinarian office is by far the best I have ever had the pleasure of taking my pets too! Super friendly staff. Their exam rooms have couches and rugs instead of cold metal tables. And of course all pets are allowed on the furniture. When the vet came in he sat on the rug with my dog and proceeded with the exam right there, making my dog feel much more comfortable and less anxious and stressed. They also have treat jars around the office so there is always one near by, just in case your little (or big) one needs a little snack. At other vet offices my dog would pull away from me and it was like playing tug-a- war just to get him in the door, at this office he runs to the door, goes in greats everyone (waits for a treat, I gave a fat dog!) and when they call his name over the inner com he gets up and off he goes. By far the best veterinarian office, I travel 1 1/2 hours one way to take my pets here!

This place is great. The staff is super friendly and love in our dog when we come in. He loves going in and getting all the attention. They are accommodating and worth the wait if you are looking for a new vet. They make it special for the pet and the owner. They give great advice and truly care about the pet.

Out dog is a mid-to-late model, not with the latest intelligence in the engineering, and he sometimes makes poor choices on fuel. Last night it was everything green and standing on its own in our yard. It's like a really slobbery herd of goats went through there. Fortunately, we were able to drop him off first thing at VCA Lakeside this morning, and they put a quick and friendly stop to the sputtering, coughing and leaking. They explained the issues clearly, offered fair and timely options, kept us updated on progress, and had us back on the road by the afternoon. Even the pickup process was friendly and helpful, and the maintenance instructions for the next week were easy to follow. Highly recommended for those models that always manage to shake a joint loose or clog up a hose.
