How to Save Money at Animal Emergency and Specialty Center

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

My experience with Animal Emergency & Specialty Center of Reno has always been absolutely outstanding. The staff is welcoming, friendly, and kind. Taylor, in particular, has always gone above and beyond to make my senior dog and I feel welcome and supported. The doctors are extremely skilled. Dr. Schroeder, the clinic’s surgeon, needed to perform a somewhat complicated tumor removal on my senior dog. I always felt I was in great hands, especially with her very responsive and skilled support team of Meghan, Cami and Allie. They always got back to be promptly whenever I had a question or concern and really made me feel my dog and I were in good hands during a pretty stressful time for us. I would absolutely recommend others go here and feel lucky that I found them for the care my dog needed.

I would highly recommend this vet clinic. I brought my very old cat in for the first time. She was having seizures and other severe pain and symptoms. They took her back immediately to evaluate her and help her. Unfortunately, we had to say goodbye that night. The staff were very kind and compassionate during this difficult time. It felt like I had been going to this vet for years. The veterinarian took her time to explain what she felt was going on and gave me several options for care. The front of house was very empathetic and were checking in with me often as I waited and while I said my goodbyes. I cannot thank them enough for their efficient and supportive care during this time.

The Doctor our sweet Salem had was so sweet and caring. It’s never a good thing you end up going here but we are forever grateful for the care he had for his remaining hours. Thank you❤️

Back on Saturday night my 1 year old cat went into labor and at the time we realized she was in distress so we called and they told us to come in so we did. When we got there they took her in and they where nice and kind about the situation when they came and got us to discuss her treatment the vet themselves was pushing super hard to have her get a C-section and when I informed her that we didn’t have the kind of money to spend three to $5000 She suggested other alternatives, which I was grateful for, but when I asked them to do an x-ray cause I wanted to make sure that the kitten was in place because at the time I couldn’t drop that kind of money she went ahead and preformed the extras and then informed me that the x-ray shows only THREE Kittens my cat can go home she did inform me that is she does not pass her first kitten by 6 o’clock the next morning to call back by 6 o’clock we’re able to get her kitten out, but it was passed and by the rest of the day we were able to get two other kittens out, but we realize that something was wrong when we were giving her a bath with her exhausted body we could feel in her belly move and at this point I had to wait until the next day to talk to our local vet (this was after hours during Easter and I didn’t want to bring her back to this vet in Reno we do live an hour away) so the next day I called my vet to bring her in and turns out there were four more still in there that already passed and she almost died. In total she would have had 7 kittens not THREE as the emergency vet stated. My cat is very young and was very exhausted at this point when I talked to my tech at my vet office I had mentioned that they did an x-ray on her and they swore there was only three and the tech told me , that x-rays were very accurate and for them to tell me that there was only three of them is very frightening she can’t speak on their behalf but that kind of scared her that they could’ve made that kind of mistake. That type of mistake could’ve cost my cats life, so please be aware when you go to emergency vet they are good for some things, but not all situations.

I highly recommend this place for any emergency veterinary care you might need. We brought our very very sick fur baby in. We could tell she was suffering greatly and didn’t want her to wait not even an extra few hours for care so we brought her into this place. They got us in very quickly and did such a good job taking care of our baby, and also making sure we were informed with every decision being made in regards to her care. This cat was our baby and they knew how special she was to us and they took such good care of her. We had to make the most unfortunate decision for a pet owner to ever have to make and put her to rest as she was in stage 5 kidney failure and was suffering with every moment of her life. The doctor we saw was Mark Atkinson, the level of compassion he showed was so soothing for my husband and I as we put down our very first pet we ever got as a couple. He took the time to explain and comfort us that what we were doing was the kindest choice for our beloved pet. He even gifted us a special paw print of our baby after a small discrepancy at the counter. In a time of such loss, the most we could ask for in those moments was received. When it came time to let her go, they took extra care to make sure her passing was a smooth as possible and allowing extra time for the sedative to work for our comfort. She went quietly and they allowed us as much time as we needed with her. If I only had one thing to say that would not be 100% positive, it would be the cost of the care. But that did not matter to us as much as the level of care our pet received. Thank you so much from my husband and I to all the staff at Animal Emergency & Specialty Center.
