How to Save on Veterinary Costs at NorthStar VETS

Preventive care

Routine wellness exams can help identify health issues early, often before they become more serious or expensive to treat. Regular checkups are one of the most effective ways to manage long term veterinary costs.

Compare prescription pricing

Some pet medications prescribed at veterinary clinics may also be available through local or online pharmacies. It can be helpful to compare pricing when appropriate to reduce ongoing medication costs.

Consider pet insurance

Pet insurance may help cover a portion of eligible veterinary expenses depending on the plan, including accidents, illnesses, and in some cases preventive care. Coverage details, reimbursement levels, and deductibles vary by provider.

Getting to Know Your Veterinarian

Experience

Ask whether the clinic has experience treating your specific type of pet, since care can vary between dogs, cats, and pocket pets.

Emergency Care Procedures

It’s helpful to understand how the clinic handles after-hours emergencies, including whether they provide emergency services or refer to nearby emergency hospitals.

Communication Preferences

Ask how the clinic communicates with pet parents, including updates, test results, and follow up questions.

Breed Specific Health Considerations

Some breeds may be more prone to certain health conditions. Early awareness can help with prevention and early treatment.

Facility Tour

We have been seeing dr chauvet the neurosurgeon who has been absolutely amazing there. She saved our dog when we were on the urge of putting him down due to finances and the surgery cost was way too much but thankfully they brought the cost down to where we can afford it again. The staff there is very friendly and helpful. My only complaint is that when you get checked out it takes forever and hope that they can fix that sooner ! It’s very clean there too.

We recently brought our dog, Oliver in for a critical situation—he was having a severe allergic reaction and struggling to breathe. From the moment we arrived, the staff was nothing short of amazing. They acted swiftly and professionally, providing life-saving care. Everyone we encountered was kind, compassionate, and incredibly attentive. They kept us informed throughout the entire process, which made an incredibly stressful situation more manageable. We are so grateful for their expertise and dedication—it truly made all the difference. Thank you, Kelly, Julie, Dr Muniz, and so many others whose names we didn’t get. Thank you for everything you did for Oliver and for the care and empathy you showed us during such a scary time!

****my dogs visits from 2019 still haunt me to this day, I always tell EVERYONE to steer clear of this manic place*** I’ve had a HORRIBLE experience here. Our Rottweiler started having seizures back in February(…2019) and it was recommended by our specialty vet to see a neurologist for a MRI and spinal tap and xrays. They recommended Northstar because of the lack of interns, less likely to get to know an answer to a question. Athena’s MRI consultation went okay, I wouldn’t know. I was also never informed to NOT give her the anticonvulsants before anesthesia. Decent neurologist nice facility no issues. We dropped her off the following morning. They called saying she was ready for that day and to pick her up AT 5. Okay well I left work early to be there by 5 but there were major accidents on both major highways to get there from Annandale, NJ. They called me SIX TIMES ASKING WHERE I WAS. I had to explain myself everytime that I had no control over the incidents. They rushed me getting my dog when I got there. Didn’t go over ANYTHING with me. Had me go into the back to get my own dog because they were scared of her? My dog literally dragged me out of the facility to only relieve herself both ways MULTIPLE times. Did they not take care of my dog in there? They rushed me out of their facility. The reception desk has zero clue on what is going on and clearly do not communicate with each other. We called a couple times to talk about our insurance and that we needed a detailed invoice with a note from the neurologist on why the procedure was done. The first receptionist said no problem. But when we got there another made it a huge deal claiming they don’t do things like that.... like lady...we just paid you $5,000 out of pocket. Just sign this that the procedure was done and we will be out of your hair. Fast forward to two weeks ago. We called to make a follow up appointment because Athena is still having seizures and wanted to speak with the neurologist. Well it is now today and have yet to hear anything. Since we are such an inconvenience to you we will gladly take our money to Red Bank.( we love red bank hospital!!!!)

We have been going to Northstar for 4 years for dermatology issues. They have Always treated Coco with care and love. I have always left the office fully informed of everything done and with a plan to manage her long term treatment. Dr’s and staff are amazing.

my baby boy had a limp out of nowhere, so i took him here as referred to by a different vet i called who was about to close. they were very upfront about costs and my options, which i appreciate. i was quoted a 1.5hr wait and it was nearly 2 hours before he was taken back, but several animals who were clearly in critical need of help came in so i wasn't mad. they were all very kind and compassionate to me and my cat.
