How to Save Money at Union City Animal Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

As always, visiting Union City Animal Clinic was a great experience. I called for an appointment and got one for the following day. The front desk staff is very helpful and personable. Mable recognizes us and always greets our furry friends. The wait time wasn't bad and the new office was very comfortable. Dr. Zalis and the vet tech were great with our dog- listened to our concerns and went over all the options. She checks everything, not just the concern we brought him in for. The exam and visit didn't feel rushed- she genuinely takes the time to get to know your pet and help however she can. I've been coming to Union City Animal Clinic for over ten years now, with countless cats and 4-5 dogs. Every time we needed them, they were there to help us keep our fur babies safe and healthy. The sad visits where we had to say goodbye to a loved one were awful, but Dr. Zalis and her staff supported us and were loving and compassionate the entire time. This is a great team of people who love animals and are there to help. The new office is comfortable and the parking is the icing on the cake.

There are no words to describe how thankful we are for the team at UC Animal Clinic. We have been taking Jeter there since he was a puppy until we had to make the tough decision to put him to sleep due to old age 2 weeks ago. We were blessed to have Jeter for 18 years and under the care of Dr. Zalis. We appreciate the care she gave Jeter and advice she gave us. It’s very evident that this is more than a profession for her. Animals are her passion and I love that she puts herself in our shoes. Mabel has always been so helpful whenever I called to make appointments or had questions. There was also another gentleman who was with us in the room the day we put Jeter to sleep who was so kind. I picked up Jeter’s ashes today and inside was a card from the staff which included a print of Jeter’s paw. That made me tear up but was so thoughtful of them. Jeter’s paws were my favorite. I literally told my husband how I wish I had a print of it but it was too late. Little did I know they made it happen without knowing my wish. We are forever grateful of you guys. Congratulations on the new location and wishing you all so many blessings. THANK YOU FOR EVERYTHING!!

Dr Zalis truly cares about your pet. She is kind and very thorough in her assessment. My dog used to shake at the vet but she now runs inside to see Dr Zalis and her staff. Mabel at the front desk is also very thorough and kind.

Reception takes all questions, inquiries, appointments requests even if it has to go to voicemail. Veterinarian is incredibly thorough with examination and will answer all questions you have. My pup would give double thumbs up for all the love and treats!

Appt was at 1030 I arrive at 945 only to have everyone and their mother go ahead of me it’s 11:02 I’ll find a vet that’s has a clean environment, and a staff that’s more professional instead of whispering among themselves and avoiding eye contact. The windows are disgusting 🤮 Good vet bad atmosphere. ZERO stars
