How to Save Money at VCA Blairstown Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I cannot say enough about the excellence of care we received. We brought both our beagles for a well exam. Both dogs love to bark and it's embarrassing at times! They made us feel completely welcome even with our screaming beagles. After we left my one dog actually got his dewclaw snagged in my other dogs harness on the car ride. We turned right back around and they helped our little boy and wrapped up his paw even though they had just closed. They were happy to be there for our dog and Dr Clegg was just the most wonderful vet. Only friendliness at this office. Will be coming back and will always recommend.

I have been seeing Dr. Lovell for years now since adopting my first pup and I can't imagine going anywhere else. We go for regularly scheduled vet visits and we have had surgical procedures done here too. All positive experiences! Blairstown VCA always has the best staff and receptionists, and although I primarily use Dr. Lovell, any other vet we have used in a last minute visit has always been so kind and helpful! They really care about your animals and it shows in how they interact with them too.

Dr. Clegg has been so kind and invested in our Great Pyrenees/Anatolian Shepherd mix named Timber. We just moved from Texas & we were so anxious about finding a good veterinarian in the area. Overall the facility was very clean and all of the staff were friendly. Dr. Clegg was very kind and patient with my big boy. She has been the best veterinarian I’ve had in years, even compared to ones before I had Timber. She has gone above and beyond in helping us with his anxiety and recent behavioral problems and truly seems to care about her patients’ physical AND mental health and well-being. If I could leave a 10 star review for her I would. We will be bringing our cats here too when the time comes for their boosters. Thank you to all who work here to make this place great.

If you are looking for a quality Vet that will do absolutely great work, take care of your baby/pet like it's their own AND not try to charge you an absurd price, (because they know how much you love your pet) then look no further. I was a bit leary at first, because I was quoted literally half the price of what I was getting from other places I had called, yes you read that correctly, "HALF!" When I arrived I was pleasantly surprised! A lot of available parking, nice appearance outside and inside and incredibly nice staff. I drove a good distance from PA to come to this place and it was worth every penny spent and every drop of gas burned. When I picked up my cat after her procedure, she was so attached to the vet, she didn't want to leave her until she recognized it was me she was being given to. So that just let me know how well she was treated. On top of all of that, I just received a call from one of the staff members, a very nice lady named Catherine. She called to inquire about my cat and make sure that she was doing okay and if I needed anything? I was so surprised I asked her, "you mean to tell me you guys do follow-up calls too?" She said absolutely! I said "Catherine I'm going to give you guys a review right now! Catherine said thank you, we appreciate you and "Queenie." (my cat 😸) She also said if I had any questions please don't hesitate to call. It doesn't get any better than that. Again, If you're looking for a good vet, look no further. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Oakley and I love you all. And we are so grateful for all you do each and every single day. It takes a strong person to deal with sick animals, healthy animals, dying animals, but then have the tears wiped away by the next little puppy wagging their tail because they love you despite just meeting you. Oakley and I will gladly travel the hour to come and see you guys.
