How to Save Money at Banfield Pet Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I came in for an emergency appointment—my pet’s dewclaw had broken and was red/tender. The techs were awful. The focus was on workplace drama around shifts, my pet’s weight (he’s a large breed and is on point for what we were told to expect based on his parents). Then, I was told he has allergies. While I appreciate, the thoroughness, I DID NOT appreciate the tone in which the news was delivered. Next, the tech made sure to ask if I was ok with the price of a cone ($19) and admonished me for bandaging and treating my pet’s paw overnight. The straw that is breaking the camel’s back right now is that I live 25mins away from this pet hospital and they told me my dog would be ready for pickup at 1pm. They called me 20 mins after I left saying that my dog is ready to be picked up. I’ve now wasted time driving home and driving back to the hospital. I’ve always like our vet…very personable, down to earth, BUT the techs are awful and I will be moving to a veterinary clinic closer to home with warm vet techs. When your pet is sick and it’s an emergency visit, the worse thing you can do is be this cold and heartless with the owner.

Took me 2 weeks to make a full recovery and effort to say my amazing gratitude (as well as my husband’s) for the whole staff who were there as for my Zeus’ emergency arrival during the early morning of March 10th we won’t forget. Although it was the most unfortunate tragically event of my life, those people came to assist with their complete energy, dedication, comfort and compassion for my husband and I with having the opportunity to have our beloved young pup, Zeus to be put into sleep safely and efficiently. And thank you for your patience dealing with me as I’m deaf according to our conversations via live translation in my iPhone while awaiting for my husband to arrive to spend our timing for Zeus’ last moments together. Due to our circumstances, this Banfield Pet Hospital including with the Medical Director came to the decision to provide us with everything especially our chance to bring Zeus home to have his ceremony and burial … we could not be more appreciative and grateful for all of your amazing support!!!💓 🥲✨ that means a whole lot to my family.

All of the staff are friendly, patient, and love the pets they are caring for. They make me and my dogs feel special and supported. The doctors are very knowledgeable and provide upfront estimates of costs of potential tests or treatments. They keep you informed of results in a timely manner and spend the time you need to make sure your concerns are heard, addressed, and understood. My dogs are both anxious, but they love the staff here! And the Optimal Wellness Plans are a great way to spread out the costs of bi-annual exams and vaccines/dental care. I especially love the free office visits now that I have an elderly dog with health issues. It’s nice to know I can provide the care my dogs need to keep them healthy and safe.

We absolutely adore Dr. Tan! She has a plethora of knowledge, was comforting and insightful. She gave us resources and general expectations for our kitten’s first year that could not have been found online. She is a wealth of knowledge.
