How to Save Money at Banfield Pet Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I have been with Bansfield for 12 years but new vet after same vet for over 12 years was very disappointing but my expectations may have been to high. Other than that I am okay with them my baby has never been sick so she has only been to see them twice a year for her 6 month visits so I am unsure how it would be when and if something were to be really wrong with her because right now she is having an itching problem and they can't seem to figure that out so thus the 3 star if that was not happening then they would get a 4 star never a 5 star everyone has faults

They added on procedures to my cat’s visit that I asked them to call me first about and discuss. I didn’t receive a phone call and was surprised at pickup to see it added without a call, especially with such a large price tag. I asked about it and was told “if you can’t pay, it’ll be sent to collections.” The man I spoke to was very hostile and did not care at all. I was pretty upset and thankfully they had me speak to a very nice lady who understood there was an error and was very helpful. I’ve gone to Banfield many times before and never had an issue like this, usually the staff is very nice, but the hostility and lack of empathy from their one associate was very upsetting and turned me away from this establishment. The lady I spoke to as well as the quality of all procedures they’ve done for my babies deserves 5 stars, but the rudeness of the one associate and his negligence during check in are baffling.

The front desk team and assistants are friendly and efficient. Love them! The vets, however, leave a lot to be desired. It’s very much a revolving door. There was one who was such an alarmist that most every time we came in for a comprehensive exam, she’d have a reason to refer us to Triangle Emergency Vet. I don’t think she’s moved on or been moved out. There is one now who didn’t check the chart and realize that our dogs were due for their dentals as part of their comprehensives. We didn’t feed them before they went in for that very reason. She called to say she missed that and we’d have to reschedule both dogs for another time. She put a prescription in for one of our dogs, but there was no paperwork on that dog’s visit in the bag, so we didn’t know what it was for. Called back and was told she was out and would return my call when she came back to work. That was two weeks ago. There are better veterinary hospitals in the area. Seek them out.

I've been bringing my dog Godiva here for years, and I've always felt that she was extremely well cared for by the veterinarians and support staff. Everyone is very friendly and the front desk folks are helpful and very welcoming. I have an older dog and I feel that my questions and concerns are addressed with respect and care.

I should have listened to the reviews. A few days ago, I called Banfield to ask about a simple service: a nail trim for my dog, who has severe anxiety. I explained everything clearly. My dog has three black, overgrown dew claws curling toward her paw pad. She’s terrified of nail trims (for good reason), and frankly, so am I after accidentally cutting too close once. I told them that I’d medicate her beforehand, as recommended, and was told I could come in anytime between 2 and 4. So I did exactly that. I medicated her, made sure she was calm, and brought her in during the designated window. Only to be told, Surprise ! they couldn’t do her nails. Because apparently I was supposed to call ahead. Funny, because no one on the phone mentioned that critical detail. Not once. Instead, I was met with blank stares and vague shrugs. So now my poor, anxious pup was sedated for nothing. Do you know what it feels like to drug your dog and then be turned away like you’re just another inconvenience? Banfield then passed me off to the Petsmart grooming area (located in the same building), who took one look and said they couldn't help and told me to go back to Banfield. At this point, I was stuck. No one wanted to take responsibility. No one showed an ounce of empathy. I felt dismissed. My dog, disoriented and medicated, was tossed around like a hot potato. Yes, I acknowledge I let her nails get overgrown. Life has been tough, and I was trying to do the right thing. But the lack of clear communication at Banfield made a difficult situation infinitely worse. I do not recommend bringing your dog here especially if they require patience, compassion, or special handling. You won’t find any of that at Banfield.
