How to Save Money at Indian Hammer Veterinary Services

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I’m disappointed that I even have to write a poor review. When I moved to Montana two years ago I had heard this was good, trustworthy and an affordable vet. As I own an English Bulldog it is hard for me to trust certain vets because this breed can be complicated with their skin and health issues. When I took my EB in the place was amazing! The vet was awesome. Fast forward to now… I first and foremost was absolutely disgusted by the unprofessional language and horsing around I could hear while I was in the waiting room with my dog whom I thought had a UTI. I’m not even sure if the girl was even a vet. The vet I met 2 years ago came out and introduced himself. I swear I could hear him in the back room with the gal talking about how our dog didn’t have a UTI. So why wouldn’t you just come in and tell me that as the vet. Also, I was beyond frustrated when I got there the gals at the front desk were far from inviting. One was eating her lunch and the other was on her phone, meanwhile phones were ringing and they kept putting people on hold. They had told me they were doing the test on our dogs urine that I had brought in to speed things up. After waiting there for almost 45 minutes in the front not even in the waiting room! This is how businesses run behind and no business should be that behind unless there was an emergency, I fully understand but please make your clients aware. My appointment was at 1pm. I don’t think I left the vet until almost 2:30pm. What a waste of the day. I hope this place improves their professionalism, time management and the vet shows his face for at least a few minutes during the appointment. Sadly, unsure if I’ll ever return.

Probably the absolute best vet experience I’ve ever had. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ After calling 6 other veterinary clinics (only because they were closer to us), I called Indian Hammer & they were more than willing to get me in just minutes before closing (on a Friday, to boot). I was emotional & scared, as I had just minutes prior been told by two other vets that my 10 week old puppy would require $5,000 surgery. They got me right in, and we were out within 10 minutes. Let me assure you, they were not going to charge me thousands of dollars for this, and they were very open & honest about the possible costs, which obviously us pet owners appreciate. I cannot thank the two gals at the front desk and of course the vet himself enough for their warmth, compassion, and professionalism. I think we found our furr-ever vet! Definitely worth the 80 mile drive!!!

I’d give them 10 stars if I could! They took amazing care of my puppy. I thought we were going to have to put Minerva down but the vet and techs were so supportive in helping me find a solution so she could live her final day at home. After she passed, they were so caring and professional in getting her cremated and returned to us. The extra step in including so many nice things to remember Minerva! I greatly appreciate how caring and heartfelt ALL of the staff was with the whole situation! Thank you so much!

I had herd great things about this place. Herd it’s an amazing place to take our animals. I called to get some info. I felt like I got snapped at. There was an issue with one of my pups, DURING business hours, I tried to see if there was any open apts. I was told not unless I wanted to pay for the emergency services as they would be closing soon…it was 3-330pm….because of this idk if I can trust this place. Idk if they do or don’t have emergency after hour care.
